I don't have Prime and recently placed a $26 order for free shipping with 2 items. One item shipped. The other one says it's delayed for a couple weeks. Now I see the delayed one in stock and much cheaper at another retailer.

I tried Googling and found 1 post if you cancel an item in a free shipping order without Prime, Amazon will then tack on $6 shipping on the item that shipped afterwards without warning. Is this correct?

I don't want to risk trying it. I assume the only option is to let the other item ship and return it to Amazon rather than cancelling it.

Yes, they will. I don't think you'll be able to cancel the order (since 1 item shipped) without going through Customer Service, at which point they'd charge you for the extra shipping.
