Se7en, Zodiac, and Fight Club for me. But, Social Network and Benjamin Button aren't too far behind.

For Nolan, Memento, the Dark Knight, Inception, then the Prestige.

Critics and fans of the book loved it. The fans of the Swedish film bashed it even though that film butchered the book.

All this talk makes me really excited to get the Zodiac re-issue coming out!

Those are my top 4 too, and I've rewatched all of his many times.

That reminds me that I still need to get around to reading the book series. I really hope that Fincher returns for the sequels also.

Yeah those first three are unimpeachable. I thought Prestige was too gimmicky, I've been wanting to rewatch it though.

I really, really like Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but it's on the lower end of Fincher's filmography.

Again, expertly crafted but the central mystery of the story isn't that interesting. Lisabeth and Blomviskt are what people respond to. I just wish they'd be in a better mystery story.

But, I do hope Fincher finishes that trilogy. I want to see more of Mara's Lisbeth via Fincher. I'll be sad if he doesn't finish that story.

Me, too. Not only is their chemistry great in the second and third books, the mystery is much more interesting and developed far more. I really hope Fincher finishes the trilogy.

The gimmicky aspect wears off when you really look at what the film is really about; the price of obsession. The game between Borden and Angier is a sad story, when you look at what both lost and what both could've gained had they not pushed it.

Nolan's been accused of being a cold director but between the endings of Knight, Rises, Prestige, and Inception, I just don't see that criticism.

There's some heavy, emotional catharsis in each of those four pictures that changes the view of the film once you truly understand what each of those films are about on repeated viewing.

I actually am of the opinion that the barely adequate (albeit superbly visualized) mystery complements the dual character study (D.W. Griffith) established within the first hour.

I think he's a fantastic director. It just irks me when some claim his films are "flawless" and "instant masterpieces". I should probably re-watch The Prestige. Haven't seen it in a long time.

I say we start a discussion about which director is better, and then list all pertinent films of said director(s)....oh that already happened.

Carry on!

Agreed, and that is exactly why The Prestige is one of my favorite films, and the ending somehow makes me happy even with what what was lost before it

As much as I love Nolan I will admit that those claims annoy me too.

I definitely noted the themes, but the inevitable contrivances threw me off a bit on first viewing. Ive got the Blu right by my player ready to be rewatched.

I don't have the time or desire to write the essay-length post it would take to detail everything I don't like about TGWTDT; it's much more concise to say I don't like any of it, from the title sequence to the script to the casting/performances to the whole idea of it. The best thing I can say about it is that it's a technically well-made movie; artistically, it's a dog fart.

Without getting into spoilers "The Prestige" is a failure of a film because structurally the film only supports the "false" version of events. I'd give Nolan props or whatever if his twist didn't leave some bizarre and ineffective narrative behind. You can deceive and mislead your audience but "The Prestige" is proof that you can't structure a film in a way that focuses on and favors one character and just hope it holds together when you switch everything around.

I've always said that the chronological "Memento" is a similar narrative failure but that's a now-discontinued Easter egg whereas the "true" Prestige is the only version after that first time you watch it which is a far greater failure.

I never understood how
[Show spoiler] Leonard is somehow the Sammy Jankis character, even though it's clear throughout the film he has longer during each scene before his memory is lost.

I still enjoy Memento, though.
