I guess the new myth about this movie is that "It has a great beginning" and goes terribly wrong.

Except many, many of the reviews (go read them) state that the first act is incredibly slow and padded and itself should have been compressed except apparently they couldn't because then the movie would have been too short to even be feature length.

What has been said by many reviewers is that the casts performance in the first third is very good with better interplay. And many reviews state that the rapport and acting are terrible in the reshoot scenes.

So the original screenplay version apparently was very slowly paced and more of a drama with the actors doing a good job.

Then Fox saw the rough cut and said-there's no action and had them do numerous reshoots to have a traditional CBM movie climax.
And they cut away much of the second act as well as it too was apparently very slowly paced.

So basically they filmed a "superhero" drama and then the studio decided fans wouldn't like that and they changed lots of it.

Would I want to see a superhero drama? Personally no.
Does a studio want to spend $120 mil on a superhero drama? I doubt it.
Would one be a hit? I doubt it.
Would the original scripted version be a good or great movie? Probably not, but it may well have had better performances.

But there are going to be a lot of folks who don't like to say they're wrong claiming that the original version was some kind of masterpiece.
In fact, on other boards some are already claiming this.

That's better I suppose than admitting there were bad signs literally from the beginning that this was a mess.

and I feel very strongly that the main problem from the beginning was the folks involved being very ashamed off and embarrassed by the traditional FF.

They took the names and powers and made their own movie and it wasn't even an action movie. It was described as a "coming" of age and their powers were described as "disabilities" and as a Cronenberg type movie as they are afflicted with these disabilities.

Fine, great, interesting.

Fantastic Four---not even close.

That's what I meant with tries to succeed. I admit the film probably would have been better as a Chronicle clone, but Trank was chosen to write and direct a Fantastic Four film and this result either one, looks to be so far from the mark. Fox just screwed it up further with massive reshoots.

Fantastic Four, Dr. Doom, Silver Surfer, Galactus, and Skrulls maybe?

Fox, you've got the X-Men and are doing a great job with them -- but you just suck at the Fantastic Four! Give up and gain something out of this!

I thought the first was a decent attempt. but it was 2005 and it doesn't hold up well.
They of course, blew Dr Doom--to save money on his backstory again.

A re-cut of the extended version eliminating some of the little stumbles would make it fairly good.

It was a very honest attempt limited by budget and an unambitious script, and more primitive CGI.

By at least they weren't ashamed of the FF when they made it.

If I ever do watch this one I wonder if I will be able to not see Jamie Bell as the guy he played in Nymphomaniac instead of the Thing.

Silent Ducking
Chappie was awful. Barely 2 hours but more like an 114 minutes without credits.

Of course it will crack 30Mil domestic probably not this weekend. You know how it goes a fool and his money are easily parted, and there are a lot of fools out there.

You're right. what would have been best for all is Fox having trank make Chronicle 2 as a traditional non "found footage" movie with a bigger budget and more ambitious story.

Then they would have known how he would handle a regular movie with bigger cast/budget/locations.

He might have been passionate for the material and done a good job or maybe he wouldn't but they would have saved a lot of money.

As for the FF property, just go big or go home. hire a seasoned director or someone who has huge passion for the franchise--Ant-Man's Payton Reed is/was a huge fan and give that person the tools they need to make it right.

Or just take the deal marvel offered in 2012(?) of letting them have Galactus, Surfer and The Watcher and keep the rest of the FF franchise for a few years longer.

this turning out to be an epic mistake.

I'm just seeing this as a huge flop, like slightly above Black Hat flop. There are just too many films out right now that people would rather go see. Heck It's possible Ant Man could make about as much or more this weekend as Fantastic Four does.

It's projected take is dropping but the word doesn't reach everybody and some demographics will see it.
Also, some folks who hear a movie is awful they think it may be funny, campy awful and see it, but most reviews are saying boring awful.

Boring awful means week #2 will be a disaster.

It's really too bad, I was really really hoping this would be great. Based on the trailer, I got the vibe that this would be a sci-fi film that just happened to have superheroes in it. I was really looking forward to that.
