The Low Frequency Effect (.1) channel shouldn't even have an option to adjust a Low Pass Filter. It should be locked at 120hz. If you adjust it any lower than 120hz, the information above that cutoff is thrown away. It's a useless and detrimental option. Ask Big Daddy or Chris Kyriakakis.
![]() https://forum.blu-ray.com/subwoofers...nt-part-i.html https://audyssey.zendesk.com/entries/230307-lfe-setting Edit: Bass management is a completely seperate thing from Low Frequency Effect. If you cut a speaker off at 80hz, everything below that gets redirected to the sub(s). That's bass management. The Low Frequency Effect channel is the discreet .1 information that covers a range of up to 120hz, and is specifically mixed exclusively for the subwoofer output. If a person speakers doesn't do well on the low-end, then they should be raised until they like how well that speaker handle the low-end, and then let the subwoofer handle anything lower. So the test is, how low can a speaker go that is not distorted, and the sound is fine to you? Whatever that number is, then the sub should take over anything lower. When you look at the specs of a speaker, and they posted as 40hz is the lowest, you really should raise them to 50hz(I believe 10hz is a good number to go above the printed specs and test) and give an over listen to see how you like. |

If you have all of your speakers cutoff at 80hz in bass management, then that is just 'layered' over the original LFE sound, so in that case, the only thing you would hear between 80hz and 120hz would be the discrete LFE information, if their was anything there. Edit: I originally learned of this from Big Daddy. My old Sony receiver didn't even have an option to adjust a LPF on the LFE, but my new Onkyo does. If you set all of your speakers to large, there would be no bass management happening, right? The sound coming from the subs would only be the discrete .1 channel, which contains information up to 120hz. If you cutoff the LFE channel lower than 120hz, that information is discarded.
I'm not trying to be a jackass, I'm just trying to be helpful, plus I'm a little high on life right now. ![]() As many receivers as there are that have this option, and as confusing as it seems to be, I think a Big Daddy sticky wouldn't be a bad idea. |

![]() Tonight I fired it up, and after a while I noticed the bass didn't seem loud enough. I checked my subs, and one was turned off! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It was just a bad sub cable. ![]() ![]() I can't even begin to describe how much better it sounds, but I'll try. ![]() It's so much cleaner, dynamic, dimensional, and balanced. Not a trace of distortion like I got from my Sony, that's the best thing. It also has a built-in SPL meter for matching the gain on the subs. Having my subs at exactly the same level is so much more balanced than me 'earballing' them. That combined with what Audyssey did to the subs is amazing. My subs are more balanced and deep than I thought possible, and also seem to 'point' to themselves a lot less than they used to. The room seems to sound bigger too. In summation, ![]() |

Got a vid for you, but if you have a weak stomach, don't watch it. Actually, I'm a little surprised this kind of video was on that site.

![]() It took me two days to get my setup working right, but now everything is great. Last night I started off with Stanley Clarke and Friends - Live at the Greek CD. I played around with the different modes like Pure, Stereo, and some surround modes too. Then I watched Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense, David Gilmour - Remember That Night, and Rush - Time Machine. Last night was concert night, so tonight will be movie night. I'm going to finish off the last two episodes of Band of Brothers(really great show so far), then probably an action or sci-fi movie or two. Something with great sound for sure. I might even throw on the train crash scene from Super 8. ![]() ![]() The only thing I've changed after running Audyssey is raising the crossovers of the front and center speakers from 40hz to 70hz. I will probably compare 70hz to 80hz tonight to see which sounds better. I'm really amazed at the clarity, and the overall soundfield seems much more three-dimensional and engulfing. At one point last night, I turned it up to reference level for just about 30 seconds, and it still sounded completely clean and clear with no harshness, clipping, compression, or distortion like I would get from my Sony at that level, but damn was it loud! From the three concert BDs I watched last night, it seems like -12db~-14db is a nice robust but comfortable level. With my old Sony receiver, I had my BA sub gain set at about 1:00 and my AA sub set at about 2:30. When I ran the sub level balancing test, it had me set them both around 9:00 to achieve 72db from each, so I was expecting them to be much, much quieter, but they really don't seem to be, for some reason. They blend so much better with each other, and with the other speakers than before, and their overall response is so incredibly smooth and deep. It honestly sounds like I upgraded my subwoofers. So far, the two major improvements that I've noticed is the overall clarity all around, but especially in the center channel, and the smoothness and depth of my subs. I can also feel them a lot more now than I did before. ![]() ![]() |

![]() Over the last couple of years, I've read practically every review on this site, and I'm very familiar with the crazy good ones. From my collection, I would say some of my favorites for audio quality are: The Dark Knight Fight Club(mid-air collision) Hellboy II Hot Fuzz How to Train Your Dragon The Incredible Hulk Iron Man I & II The Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition Master and Commander Pirates of the Caribbean(all) Saving Private Ryan Serenity Star Trek('09) Star Wars: Episodes I & II (I know, I know) Sunshine Super 8 Terminator Salvation Toy Story II(intro) Tron Legacy U-571 War of the Worlds X2: X-Men United(the others are very good too) In order to keep that list from getting way too long, I actually left quite a few other choices out. If I had to pick the absolute best two, I would say War of the Worlds and Saving Private Ryan(both Spielberg films). ![]() |
