In the market for a new tv. Wanting 55". I'm leaning towards getting a 4K UHD, but part of me is partially wanting 3D. Not sure how often I'd use the 3D though.. cheapest option at BBY for 4K 3d is 1,100, and that's out of my budget. What would you recommend?
4K is completely overhyped. Plus- if you don't get OLED 4K, then don't bother.
The jump from 1080p to 4k is FAR less dramatic than the jump from SD to 1080p.
Lots of 3D blu ray out there. Very little 4K (more on the way, but still very small 4k content choices).
(And waiting certainly will benefit your pocketbook as new tech can drop as drastically as 50% within 12 months time, not to mention the time for fixng bugs. OLED has already started dropping. Should be reasonable by the end of 2017).

I would go 3D, but stay away from 4K.

Not enough content in 4K and even if there was, there isn't the dramatic difference that you will see when compared to 3D.

I think I will keep a 3D TV (and use it frequently) as long as they keep making them.

I also see 3D blu-ray discs consistently selling out both in the aftermarket and on the new release walls so there is definitely a market there.

Kind of random but don't know where else to ask this. Picked up a used blu-ray from a thrift store and it still had a Google Play code inside. Is there a way to check if this code is still valid without redeeming it? I would rather trade the code for a different movie than use it myself.

Default I've been out of the steelbook game for a while...

And I was thinking of getting back into it. I'm a bit concerned though with the rise of 4K. Will it become the new standard home format? It would blow if I started buying blu-ray steelbooks again, and then in a few years I'd have to rebuy all of my favourite movies on steelbook again. I'm actually a bit uninformed on 4K, is it as big of a jump as it was from DVD to blu-ray?

Thanks.

If what you are asking is whether 4K is any good this will heavily derail this forum.

However, if you are asking about SteelBooks, I would say that it is worth getting back into because all formats use the same disc and you can re-use the SteelBook for 4K movies if you just swap out the discs.

If I'm not mistaken, I think he's asking about 4K SteelBooks, and whether or not he should jump on the 4K SteelBook train.

I find it quite sad that they have to design a whole new logo for 4K UltraHD, and reserve new shelf space for this whole new market for 4K UltraHD. Does this mean that the DVD market will follow in the footsteps of the previous VHS? I am still waiting for remaining titles to be ported over from DVD to VHS.

I mean you could simply place your 4K discs inside your current Bluray Steelbook tray. What would suck is if Scanovo or whoever start manufacturing a G3 Steelbook case of substantially different size and/or shape. For uniformity sake, yes that would suck.

Sorry if my question was unclear...

I'm not sure if I should start collecting bluray steelbooks again, or whether I should start collecting 4K steelbooks instead. Because if 4K is the new standard video format, I'm guessing that most blurays that are out at the moment will eventually get a 4K steelbook release, meaning if I bought a bluray steelbook today, I'm not sure how long it would be until it's outdated and the 4K release would have come out... I'm also worried it will make my collection seem disjointed.

There are very few 4K SteelBook releases at the moment, but the trend is catching on.

He's wondering if he should start collecting 4K SteelBooks instead of 2K SteelBooks, but 4K SteelBooks come with a 2K disc. So, I would go ahead and start collecting the 4K releases.

It's never too late to collect Steelbooks. The SB trend seems to be picking up more and more in the US (despite being around for 10+ years). There's plenty of steelbooks that run pretty cheap, too, if you missed some. This is a good time to pick them up, too, because Best Buy sells a lot more of them and run good specials (Amazon, too).

As far as format, that's your preference. I do NOT own 4K and don't plan to, but I did pick up two steelbook 4K's (Labyrinth and Jason Bourne). I don't plan to pick up anymore unless the price is right or a movie that I really really like (Star Wars, for example).

I think Best Buy (and possibly more retailers) will start going towards 4K steelbooks in the future. Studios want to push and promote 4K, and one way to do that is collector's wallets, so steelbooks are a way to go. They can charge $25-$35, versus Blu Ray's, that cost around $19 (unless your'e Disney).

This sub can be great for resource, since users on here post 2016/2017 lists in the US, UK, and other countries, which can help you decide which movies to buy in steelbook and save up for the movies you care about.

So definitely not too late, even if you pick up 2 or 3 the entire year, you're still collecting.

Does the Mediamarkt Spawn steel have its own thread? I think it's a nice looking one, too. Why no love? It's not even in the database yet.

So I'm thinking of picking up a Steelbook or two and possibly collecting them.

My first question is how well do Steelbook's hold their value?

Also, I used to own Halo 2 Limited Edition for Xbox. Would that be considered a Steelbook?

What are Amarays and FuturePaks I hear mentioned?

Sealed steelbooks should hold their Cost value pretty well, unless they are heavily mass-produced like say Star Wars Force Awakens. It all depends on supply and demand.

Amarays are just what we call normal plastic blu-ray cases

This thread compares Steelbooks with Futurepaks (new name for Metalpaks)

IMO you should collect steelbooks only if you like to have movies in special cases because there's not really that much of an investment for the most part. Unless it happens to be one that sold out really quick or had some problem where the remaining inventory was lost or had to be recalled.

I'm interested in purchasing some foreign steel books. Do foreign versions usually come with all the extras and an English menu to navigate? I might get the Korean version of Oldboy and Requiem For A Dream. Thanks in advance!

Honestly. I wouldn't start. It's not a cheap hobby.

I've got a fare few now and part of me is like. I could have bought a car with that money...

Don't get me wrong. I still buy them. But I've slowed down massively. Only buying stuff i really like and want.
