The many negative reactions here are puzzling, considering how positive the Blu-Ray.com review is.

In motion it looks terrible, it's a real shame

The Blu-Ray.com review strongly disagrees.

Hi! Check this comparison. The first cap comes from the 2013 BluRay release and you can tell the true Ariel fin's teal colour, which is something important since thar colour was specially developed for her. Comparing with the 2019 BluRay cap, the teal colour has turn into undoubtely green.

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit, look how the new Blu just smudges away the grain.

Promo materials had the fin as green, not teal. The 2019 looks more like 90s home video releases than Diamond Edition.

Not sure if I would consider colors an issue here.

I assume that those were caps from the standard BD versions. If so, this one pairing at least seems to to support my hurried rambling last night on this thread - that I recall the Diamond Edition BD having more grain than the new release.

If anyone has the corrected U.S. release Diamond Edition BD and DVD, I would be interested in both as I didn't get around to the replacement program. I feel like this would be an impossible task acquiring off eBay unless they marked the discs with a v2 or something (no one will pop in a disc to check - I've tried for other titles before).

No, Geoff- can't you see? The real problem is a slight color shift, to less precisely match our perfect and hermetically-sealed collective memory of a theatrical presentation that occurred in a theater 30 years ago. Remember that screening? We all came out to the lobby and that Disney rep was there, just going on about how the print was a 1:1 match with the OCN and the theater had been set up so impeccably. Now stand in a circle, he told us, and hold hands. Burn the images into your memory so that, decades hence, you'll be able to recall, with photographic precision, the exact shade you saw today in that reference frame that stood before your eyes for a twenty-fourth of a second.

Yes, is a slight and deliberate hue change that also happened in a more intense way in the 2006 Platinum Edition. So why the 1999 DVD or the 2013 bear another hue? Is this a big issue? Well for me it is since there is an original artistic color choice of the creators. Why the promo images or even the merchandise always have Ariel's fin green? I don't know, maybe the same reason for changing the silverish cinderella gown into a baby blue color. It's always the same story, and of course I can't totally trust my 30-year memory, but for me that slight hue change ruins all the new master.

The bluish-green color of Ariel's mermaid tail was a hue specially mixed by the Disney paint lab; the color was named "Ariel" after the character.

... and it's still present on the new disc. How do you know which home release is the most precisely correct? Have you compared the home releases to the film's printmaster, projected in a perfectly-calibrated (and accuracy-checked) theater?

But the lithographs all seem to look closer to the green version. Not sure how those compare from an accuracy perspective.

No 4K is worth upgrading if you have $119. Resist the urge!

in this comparison, how funny, the teal colour appears in both BluRay releases, so maybe it's the accurate colour

Maybe it all depends on the lighting of the scene whether it's better to have her tail fins be teal or a straight green.

I remember Ariel's bellybutton being more round and darker back in '89. Oh, and the snarfblat was more chestnut brown.

Love the 4k disc.
