I really wish the cynics would elaborate and give specific examples of how the Star Wars sequel trilogy has become "Disneyfied", because I just don't see it.

This film felt very much like a Lucasfilm product without George Lucas at the helm. Everyone contributing ideas and working together as a team to make the best film possible that would appease old and new fans. It's also been well documented through interviews and Q&As how this story came to be and who contributed certain ideas.

I would too, but you can see my point where Abrams has made the franchises referenced in my initial post accessible to newer audiences that may not have been familiar or avoided those franchises for whatever reason, and would probably be doing the same positive thing for Galactica and Firefly/Serenity.

Not taking Whedon's baby away from him, that's definitely not my take on this

Disney played it safe with making the movie A New Hope rehash. People say that Disney didn't want a repeat of the prequels and that's fine but I think it wouldn't have been too hard to take a little risk and create something different. Given how shit the prequels were, it wouldn't be even remotely difficult to top them. Anything new would have been leagues better than what the prequels gave us.

Besides, it's STAR WARS for ****s sake. It's an immensely successful brand. You're GUARANTEED to make a huge profit. Then again, Disney's happy with making safe, average, run of the mill movies (i.e. the Marvel series) that have no heart or real consequences and just exist to create sequels.

Don't worry. The familiarity aspects of The Force Awakens were probably just "training wheels" to ease us older longtime fans into the fold before going full-tilt into a different sort of storyline with the new characters in the next film.

Besides, with regard to the "updated Death Star" in this movie, stranger things have happened in real life.

I am kinda bummed about the Target exclusive packaging though. I got excited when I first saw the pics of it because it looked like (and I could have sworn I read that it was) a Neo Case...but it's just a crappy cardboard double-gatefold. :/

Way to pull out all the stops, Target...ya cheap bastards, you! *shaking fist!*
While the artwork is quite nice I did also think it was Neo case or at least similar to the Hunger Games Exclusives. I think I might sell and get the walmart BB8 case. I'm debating though, what do you guys think? Anyone else here have the Target one and also feel like selling?

Just the fanboy in me, but I'd love to see Eps. 7 incorporated into the character compilation artwork from the first 6 movies so I could put all the Blu-rays into a 20-24 disc holder (like the ones that were used in the UK region-free Blu-ray boxset for Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Enterprise) and then print up that cover for the case

Like others, I have decided to return my Target exclusive when it arrives. I have bought the regular edition instead.

Target goofed and sent me the regular edition. Joke's on you, Target. I was thinking of canceling that order and going with the regular edition anyway.

Cheap cardboard packaging... bah!
Streaming exclusives... bah!
A jedi craves not these things.

For those who have watched the documentary, "Secrets of the Force Awakens", does anyone know why Leia's hair was different? She had her hair in a pony tail although it was styled differently in the movie.

Nah, they charged the regular price. It's all good.

I'm probably going to triple dip when the 3D and/or UHD version comes out anyway. Which will hopefully have all of the extras (and some new ones like a commentary.)

I'm guessing she didn't want to cut her hair, so they just removed it in post.

Disney has no control over Lucasfilm's choices, Lucasfilm retains autonomy just as Marvel and Pixar retain their autonomy.

Disney only has control if it goes against the brand and they can suggest a change or flat out refuse to distribute it. But with luckily with Disney, there are different distribution studios under The Walt Disney Company. Disney just has to find the right distribution arm for the film. And even if Disney refuses to distribute a title, those three can go to other distributors outside of Disney if they wish.

Best example are the darker and harder Marvel TV shows which are still credited to Disney owned ABC Studios but are distributed and shown on Netflix. These shows are TV-MA and Disney simply doesn't have an outlet that regularly handles TV-MA rated content.

The Star Wars films are being silently distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, hence the DMA compatibility.

Strange Magic was handled by Touchstone Pictures, so no DMA.

It'll be interesting to see where Indiana Jones 5 ends up but despite WDP already having distributed the PG-13 Pirates of the Caribbean films and Star Wars, it could still end up under Touchstone pictures.
