Triangle 4/5
It gets better with repeated viewings. It's really intelligent and Melissa George gives a haunting performance. Lots of symbolism, too. The pacing is spot on and there's also some nice cinematography. The CGI looks crappy but hey, the movie is too good to be mad about it. The subtle score gave me goosebumps in some scenes. I highly recommend this movie. |

Patton
Film - 5/5 PQ - 4/5 AQ - 3/5 I gave Patton a bit of a higher rating for PQ than most would have. No doubt, I did notice the DNR-smeared texture throughout the film. But as far as I understand, Patton's original film source did not initially have much grain, anyway. Plus, some scenes, particularly scenes that showed the outdoors, looked beautiful. As far as I'm considered, I've seen some pretty terrible transfers. Judging by some of the original formats Patton has been released on, Patton didn't turn out as bad as I expected. |

Wall-E
PQ: 5/5 stunning as always. Pixar never disappoints AQ: 5/5 there are a lot of explosions and ambient sound effects in this one FIRST TIME VIEWING. i finally got around to buying and watching Wall-E today. and simply put, i LOVED it. i loved everything about the film. my only minor complaint is that even at a quick 90 minutes, i think some of the scenes could've been trimmed a tad. not that 90 minutes is long, but some of the scene later on in the film that aren't really necessary for the main story purpose could've been shorter than they are. and as much as i love Wall-E, it will not get a 5/5 from me. don't know why. it has all the magic and charm in the world, but i feel it deserves a 4.75/5, not a 5/5. i know, i know, what's the big difference? not much. but to me there is something about a film that is a 5/5, something undescribeable. and while Wall-E comes so very close, it just barely doesn't get there. the first half hour, FANTASTIC. Wall-E definitely feels to me like a film where either your immediately hooked in and engaged by it or it moves to slowly and bores you. obviously, i was engaged by it. Wall-E's interactions with common household items was hilarious and he is kind of clumsy and made of essentially spare parts probably due to his age and hours he's worked. the relationship Wall-E builds with Eve is also done exceptionally well. i loved their interactions and particularly [Show spoiler] was well done.the opening scenes with Wall-E roaming over a vast wasteland had many great, beautiful scenes of cinematography and the score was magnificent as well. truly a great work of art that Pixar has made here. and it's another gutsy call since when it ended i said to myself, "wow. this is a kids movie? i'm sure a lot of parents were pissed by this" due to the lack of dialogue, very few human characters, and the constant jabbing Pixar did about our society being lazy, fat, useless, unmotivated, obsessed with consumerism and being less than intelligent obviously wouldn't be picked up by kids, but parents probably very easily saw these things. some may be unhappy about Pixar blurring the line between "kids animated movie" and "hidden political / society messages in a kids movie" but i loved it. and appreciate Pixar for taking such a bold chance with this film. Wall-E is the "better made" film, but gets a 4.75/5, while Monster's, Inc. gets a 5/5 from me, but i still put Wall-E ahead of it for personal favorite rankings. hope that makes sense. like nothing else before it. a true masterpiece. absolutely wonderful. 4.75/5 Last edited by iam1bearcat; 07-20-2010 at 09:39 PM. |

I don't doubt that Ellen is really strong in that movie. She's been strong in the few movies I've seen of her's so far (Juno, Whip It, and Smart People). I barely remember her in X-Men 3, so that doesn't count. Now that Hard Candy is coming out on Blu-ray in October, I'll wait until that comes out and then finally see it.

My Neighbor Totoro 5/5
I'm working my way through Hayao Miyazaki's films and I am pretty much done. Totoro is one of five of his that earned maximum points from me. He has a gift for noticing behavior, especially in children, and capturing it in his films. I don't think I have ever seen another director who manages to display pure joy. It's there in Ponyo, Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service, and it's hinted at in other stories. I love how he doesn't necessarily put villains into his stories. Many are simply snapshots of the struggles that we face growing up. He has a wonderful understanding of the human condition. His female characters are all strong and captivating. Every time I enter his imaginative worlds, I wish that they really existed. To have people behave in that way instead of lying, cheating, killing and hurting others. As such, they are all uplifting experiences and make me want to revisit them often. Disney needs to give North American releases to everything Miyazaki has ever done as soon as possible. Pixar is the only thing that comes close to Studio Ghibli and John Lasseter worships Miyazaki's work for good reason and regularly uses it for inspiration. Although these films have children as the main protagonists, everyone can enjoy them. I'm 48 and they touch me deeply. |

Same with Blair Witch. I was gonna Netflix it soon, but it's coming out on blu in October. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if I should wait for the blu. I had it in my queue last year around Halloween for our 31 days of horror thread, and it was on wait til early December, it was ridiculous

there are millions of terrible films that made their way to theaters. just because it is in the theater doesn't make it any good at all. and just because it wasn't in a lot of theaters (or any) doesn't make it bad. Son of the Mask, Antz, Wolf Creek, The Hills Have Eyes 2, Dumb and Dumberer, Gigli, From Justin to Kelly and like i said, millions others are terrible and these were all in theaters. i also wonder if he doesn't watch foreign films either, since they aren't released in U.S. theaters... he really is missing out. |

I don't think we should criticize him though. I agree that his comment is short-sighted, but when it comes down to it he likes what he likes and that's all that matters. That being said, he's obviously wrong when it comes to his comment about "if it was good, it would get released here or presented." That's just flat out wrong. There's a longgggggg list of great films that haven't been released here. |
