Possibly, I've don't think I ever touched the settings but it could be set to zoom. I took some pictures if you want to compare to the window-boxed version to make sure it didn't cut anything off. Like I said, it's my first time watching so I don't have any knowledge of how it's supposed to look.

It's stretched horizontally in those pics. There should be black bars on the left and right sides of the image as well. Check the settings for your player and display.

I couldn't find a year on the case, but it states that it's letterboxed widescreen in the original theatrical exhibition.

Ahh, thanks. Was that how the other dvd appeared or windowboxed like this? I don't really know much about this stuff, so I'm not sure if my tv is zoomed in then or if its a new zoomed-in disc.

I have the same DVD for The Abyss. It should look like the image you just posted, like your viewing the movie within a picture frame.

If the DVD were in Anamorphic Widescreen it would include the wording, "ENHANCED FOR WIDESCREEN TVS" as show below, naturally filling the width of a widescreen display.

WIDESCREEN VERSION PRESENTED IN A "LETTERBOX" WIDESCREEN FORMAT PRESERVING THE "SCOPE" ASPECT RATIO OF ITS ORIGINAL THREATRICAL EXHIBITION. ENHANCED FOR WIDESCREEN TVS.

If you missed the case picture I posted up, that's what it says (minus the enhanced for widescreen tvs). Does this indicate the disc is automatically stretched? (Thank you for the help btw, like I said I know next to nothing regarding this)


If I can adjust it to have it like the True Lies pic, I'd like to do so, but none of the settings seemingly change that (unless it's a player issue or I'm missing something)

I updated my prior post. Give it another look. And as far as getting the image to display as intended, I suspect your player is also contributing to the image being stretched horizontally. There's a setting in your player you'll need to adjust as well.

I have Sony Blu-ray players. The setting in question with my Sony Blu-ray players is located under "Setup\Video Settings\Screen Format".

Screen Format
Set the video output with a different aspect ratio than the TV.

The options available are "Original" and "Fixed Aspect Ratio". In order to maintain the proper aspect ratio for non-anamorphic DVD content (...both Full Frame and Widescreen material) I need to have the option set to "Fixed Aspect Ratio".

That being said, many displays have a "Letterbox" option which stretches the image vertically. If your display has this option you could allow your player to stretch the non-anamorphic widescreen image horizontally, then set your display's "Picture Size" option to "Letterbox" which stretches the image vertically bringing it back more in line with it's original aspect ratio providing for filling more of your screen.
