All due disclaimers about needing to see this in context and motion, but what bothers me is the--I guess--slavish devotion to detail at the expense of all logical design sense inside the room. These elements don't even remotely connect; the lounge is just sort of shorn asunder, the digital backdrop dropped crudely into place. Is it worth it simply to be able to say, you know, based on Enterprise schematics, these would be the windows from that vantage? Sometimes Spock also weeps for leaving well enough alone.

Two things (I’m at about the same point - just after the transporter accident).

1. Does anyone else feel like the new sound mix is a bit heavy in places on the center channel? Full disclosure, I do typically have my center at +5dB, but this is the only sound mix I’ve ever played where I NOTICE that 5dB over the other speakers. Maybe that says more about the poor mixing of other films rather than this one, but it isn’t consistent. Sometimes it’s fine…the place I really noticed it was when Kirk arrived at Starfleet Headquarters. His dialogue sounded far too loud and pinpoint to be in a wide shot in an open space like that. I’m now when they’re all watching the Epsilon 9 attack and it seems totally fine now. Weird.

2. I could have sworn that in the original DE on DVD, the “travel pod now available at cargo six” line had been corrected to “…cargo five” since the pod was Pod #5…but the audio now, while it does remove the original line, doesn’t say “cargo five” anymore. But I could be misremembering.

Man, does that enterprise leaving spacedock shot smoke the ever loving out of the 4K BD, not that that took much, but wow…gorgeous…

And there is just NO WAY that observation lounge scene is finished and won’t be retweaked before a physical release. I mean good-NESS…

Yeah, the 4K DV / Atmos is demo-worthy for this streaming version of the film. The 4K disc should be reference as well, once released in September.

Best instance of center channel volume seeming a little loud: Kirk’s “no vessel could generate a power field of this magnitude”. All seems fine again after that line. So strange. Maybe I get used to the dialogue levels, and then the extensive music-only sequences make it a surprise again? All I can think of…

Yes, I agree…while I may have a few issues here and there with the center level, the remix overall is astoundingly good. Best reworking of a title of this vintage I’ve ever heard, and it’s not close.

I should also mention that I had never seen the film before in all it's history. It's the only one. I always heard it was the more philosophical one of them all -- like 2001 meets Star Trek, etc.

I caught quite a bit of new cross talk during the Epsilon 9 intro too.

Confirmed that there are 3-4 frames at the end where Spock’s armband goes back to blue, lol…I never would’ve noticed, but that’s hilarious.

The new mixing in that scene didn't work for me at all. They basically removed nearly all of the background noise so you could hear Kirk more clearly, but now it sounds totally unnatural. In fact it sounds so "canned" and clear that it's like you're in the ADR room with the actors and not in an expansive surrounding with people all around them.

Also I didn't feel the compositing in that scene was very good either. I can't do screen shots but it's a case where the new matte work is hardly an improvement on the old matte work.

Also it really dawned on me for the first time that Kirk goes to follow Spock but he doesn't have a Thruster pack. He just has a space suit so how did he intend to follow Spock if Spock hadn't of come floating back towards him?
He didn't have a thruster suit, but in the Special Longer Version he did have a 2001 looking suit that had some sort of push button action handle that he could maneuver with.

I’m so glad it isn’t just me or my setup, because 99.9% of movies sound perfect as I have it set. I thought I was going nuts. That’s EXACTLY how the audio felt to me in that scene.

Had to pause and walk the dogs, but the look of the

looked sick as hell.

Totally, I had the precise same reaction, it was like they were now close-miked. And nearly all of the environmental sounds are gone. I went back to the theatrical version and that scene has a ton of crowd noise all in the surrounding channels, most of it removed here.

The other thing I didn't care for was how the music carried all those early scenes with the Enterprise, and it used to be just the score. Now there are several instances of added sound effects with the little ships passing by and such when Kirk gets on the shuttlecraft etc. It's not wholly distracting but why break something that didn't need fixing there.

I love nostalgia. Every time I see Kirk and McCoy look at each other after Spock heads to engineering, I remember knowing that's when to get up to flip the laserdisc to side 2

Why was the line "The new screens held" removed? It actually explains why they didn't get zapped like the Klingons.

Oh! That shot of the Enterprise
[Show spoiler]pulling a 180 after the V'Ger Flyover is so subtle but now we know why the Enterprise is headed in the same direction after the dissipation of Voyager 6
.

I like it
