I'm extremly shocked that gladiator is winning this. Don't get me wrong gladiator was a good movie. It blows my mind that people think gladiator is better but everyones entitled to their own opinion. There's people on this site who probly think twilights the best vamp movie so I don't really buy into these polls

Same here buddy. True that. Lost Boys is probably a better vampire flick than that made for teen age girl flick called Twilight. Then I didn't see Twilight because I have hair on my chest and b*lls.

How is it a rip-off? Totally different stories. One mans plight is completely different than the others.

Both their greatly loved wives are killed thus they have to get revenge on the empires who rule over their people and directly led to their loved ones death.

If Troy won an Oscar they'd be heralding that as the new best thing. Also we probably have teenagers here who don't know and movie before 2000 because, they were still in middle school then listening to AWESSOME Linkin Park. They're awesome because, they don't follow the rules. The spell Lincoln wrong because, they're tough.

Both their greatly loved wives are killed thus they have to get revenge on the empires who rule over their people and directly led to their loved ones death. Both have to get pesants/slaves to rebel against an army/country. Both die for their cause in the end. I think the ending of the movies are very similar too. When William Wallace is about die/be decapitated he sees his dead wife in the crowd. When Maximus dies his spirit flows through the fields to his dead wife and child waiting for him, if I remember that one right.

Both are midevil war epics with one man who stands up for his people (scots and slaves0 who lost their wives to the ruling empire. Except william wallace really lived. And yes william wallace would kick the shit out of max.

I went with Braveheart, I actualy saw it 4 times and only seen Gladiator once without really wanting to see it again, while I would see Braveheart again.

Of course Braveheart as Sophie Marceau, so that might be the reason.

I just don't see Gladiator as a rip-off (although I personally voted for Braveheart as the much better movie). I don't remember Max getting peasants and slaves to rebel against their country. He never sought to expose tyranny - he only wanted revenge against one man. Wallace took his revenge out on one man, then continued to right the bigger wrong on a much more epic scale.

As for their wives dying as a catalyst for their motives - that's half the movies out there. I wouldn't call Braveheart a rip-off any more then calling Gladiator a rip-off for using this highly used plot device (not sure if that actually happened to the real William Wallace).

To me, they were vastly different movies.

Again, I'm sure we could find many movies set in many time periods with the same generalized plot. To me, both of these movies were fantastic in their own right.

He he he he. I'm glad someone picked up on that. Of course I would say no.

On another note,

While the similarities are plain to see, I really dont think Gladiator is a Braveheart rip-off. Both films stand on their own quite well and they have very different styles.

Gladiator by the way, is NOT a medieval movie. 80 AD is not the medieval period. Not even close.

I agree I loved both but, Gladiator is like the step son you knew from 5 and Braveheart is like your own son. Sure you love them both but, your blood son will always be loved a little more.

+1

Both are great. However, Wallace is attempting to unite his people against tyranny, while Miximus' quest is simply personal (and depicted that way from the very begining).

To me, they are very different stories.

I seem to agree with CYMBOL, they may have some similar apects, but overall they are way different.
