The bigger the picture on my screen, the more movie theater like the movie becomes, which is much more important to me then seeing some extra side detail. I hope the movie studios realize that home movie sales are just as important as theater and start shooting their movies with that in mind.
You have a point but some of us that like movies want to see the details on the side. For us it makes the experiance more enjoyable. just my opinion

4:3 fullscreen Pan&Scan is a god-awful abomination that gives you a little more than half of the image on a 'Scope movie. And 1.78 "fullscreen" versions of 2.x films still don't show the correct image as it is intended to be seen. Why should the studios cater to people who don't care about movies?

why is it that with all the technology we cant get widescreen without the Black bars.
Theatres work in a variety of ways that can vary from Constant Height to Constant Width or variations on these extremes . All properly implemented setups will involve variable masking of some sort. In a Constant Height setup the only varialbe of the aspect ratio that changes is the width. This can be accomplished via zooming or the usage of an anamorphic lens. The usage of the lens is the more elegant solution for a variety of reasons but does require that the image is stretched vertically so that the lens coreects the resulting distortion by streching the image horisontally. In the digital front projector world the image is electronically stretched vertically ~33% and the lens is utilized to stretch horizontally ~33% to restore the correct geometry. So yes, as member Steeb mentioned it is possible in the world of 2008 - about 50 years ago as a matter of fact.

Untill we see Fixed Panel devices with a 2.35 ratio you will get black bars top and bottom for "scope" films. Even then I'm sure people will complain of the bars on the side with source that is shot with a smaller aspect ratio (1.78 or 1.33 for example)

Not so difficult really once the concept is grasped - I don't see black bars with my setup for SD (no scaler for 1080 yet, but that will come - until then zoooming the pj is sort of acceptable)

I remember similar statements made by folks back in the early 60's when color TV was really starting to take off. People would purchase a new color set and be extremely upset because most of the programs were still in black & white ON THEIR BRAND NEW COLOR TV!

"It's a color TV! Why isn't everything in color?!!!"

What most people didn't realize at the time is that most of the programs were still being shot and/or presented in black & white. A color TV wasn't going to magically change them into color.

I see the same ignorance exhibited now by statements in this thread about black bars being present on widescreen TV's. So many people go to the theaters and never, ever notice that movies are in several different aspect ratios. All they see is "the big picture".

I have a true home theater. The screen is 16 feet wide (NOT measured diagonally) by 6 feet in height. I can show everything from Gone With The Wind to Ben Hur and everything in between in the correct aspect ratio and am in no way concerned with so-called "black bars", because I can remove them with a simple adjustment of the lens on my front projector. The vertical height of the picture remains the same regardless of the source material projected on it.

On my 16x9 plasma, many movies and TV shows are either displayed letterboxed or pillarboxed and no one bats an eye. Even my wife, who is one of the most technically unsophisticated people around, fully accepts the black bars and totally ignores them because she is completely immersed in the program.

I really don't understand why people choose to be so ignorant about aspect ratios and always wanting to "fill the screen" of their TV. I guess that even though times change, most people don't.

This is one disscussion that should be put to rest. If you want a fullscreen version of this movie or any other movie for that fact, go to Blockbuster and see if they have a Pre-Viewed VHS tape and buy it.

i'm glad this era has finally given up on fullscreen... giving people the choice between FS and WS on DVD was bad enough, didn't enforce change... at least this time around they can F U to those nay sayers. i enjoy watching movies how the artist wanted me to see them... just like i would in the theaters! WOOT OAR FTW PWNS!!!111

If you think the black bars are ripping you off of your total viewing area, go buy a projector...

I am waiting for mine to still come in, but a 140 inch screen is waiting to be projected upon. That means that even in OAR, I'll get at worse 105 inches...

Also, if you have a good amount of money, like someone also suggested, you could set up an awesome constant height projected image using a cinemascope lens and mask for the different ratios...

No matter what you do though, you will always never have the WHOLE of your screen. Even if you did set up a projector with masking on a 2.35:1 screen, 16:9 movies would still take up less space and you would see black bars on your sides, until you fixed the masking....

I agree with most people on this thread however, OAR is the best thing for movie viewing. I can't even watch movies on SD anymore...everytime I see something Pan and Scan I want to stab my eyes out...

The Cable Guy on SD is the F-in worst...

Truly to be like the Theaters, would to have he widescreen effect, no loss of quality, no loss of picture, without the Black-bars.

Is that hard to understand?

Its 2008 it should be possible and standard in all homes.
Well movies on theaters have "black bars": the 1.85 screen or the 2.39 screen is surrounded by black = darkness. If the theater is not dark enough, on some you might see dark red (or some other color) "bars" = curtains; etc.

To get what we want there would have to be 3 shapes of LCDs available: 1.37, 1.85, and 2.39 (or their CE aspect-ratio named/created "variations" conventions: 1.33, 1.78, and "2.35") ("2.35" movies have been wider than 2.35 since the 70's). Or you can use a projector with variable focal length zoom (about a 2:1 zoom would cover almost every aspect ratio imaginable) and a 2.40 wide (or more!) screen with curtains. Just like the theaters do.

Because 1.78 is still boxy for 2.39 movies

They were under false expectations, simplifying everything thinking all rectangular pegs fit into the same singular rectangle box. Wait till they find out Casablanca and Snow White will also have black bars. On the sides.

As a filmmaker that prefers to shoot in 2.39:1 aspect, I would be pretty mad if someone chopped my work up and watched it in 4:3..

What's the point of me even going to all the trouble of filling up my frame when some idiot is just going to mess it up and chop off the information I put in that frame.

Original Aspect ratio of what the filmmaker intended is the only way to go.

even on a 16x9 TV the 'black bars' on a 2.39:1 movie are tiny... who even notices them after 5 minutes into the film anyways?

It is an HD DVD (not a BD), but The Interpreter has a nice extra where Sydney Pollack says pretty much the same thing and shows with examples what he is trying to get across to the viewers in subtle ways that is ruined by cropping.

I think so this is a Joke unless there is sth inside it.

Anyway i dont think anyone still and want to watch a Full Screen like 4/3 TV

Once someone watched a Widescreen movie its hard and painful to go back and watch it in 4/3 ratio.

This is true too when you watched BD in highdefinition it is very hard to go back and watch the same movie in DVD or HD-DUD(Looser Format ever made)

No it's just you, stop complaining about black bars, do you realise your actually getting more picture not less, don't you? Personally I find it more distracting to have the camera panning & scanning all the time. If you want the screen to be filled go back to a 4:3 TV and VHS, better yet BETA! BETA offers better quality than VHS and it's Sony

I must admit I was a bit perplexed and mad when I rented Braveheart and there were big black rectangles top and bottom of the picture, that was 6 years ago and before I knew any better.

Do us widescreen lovers a favor do some reading on the net and stop complaing about. I better stop before this makes me "More than happy"

I thought people who owned blu-ray would know about this stuff? guess not

This is my first and I think it's on a good topic I'd like to discuss, I like OAR as much as anyone else but I bought a 61" Samsung DLP for a reason. If I wanted 31 inches of movie I'd have bought a 30" tv. With that said I would prefer it if the directors shot the movie in a 16x9 aspect ratio like they did for most DVD's instead of everyone buying new 16x9 widescreen high def tv's, getting that high def player just to have a smaller picture. I work at Best Buy and I tell you the average person still wants "Full Screen" and hates "black bars."

Thank you for listening to my rant, I'll be here more often!

People are always going to complain about something, even if what they say makes no sense...like wanting all movies to be fullscreen because they paid alot of $$$ for their tv's so the picture should fill the WHOLE thing
