I just got Dirt 2 last night.
Do you guys feel a wheel makes it that much better? Also, is there a wheel that doesn't need to be attached to something? Or should I just build something to attach it to? I've been reading a lot about the G25 or G27. Would these be the best for the money? |

A steering wheel helps me quite a bit in Dirt 2 as well as other driving games. I was having a hard time controlling the car/truck with the controller but did much, much better with a steering wheel.
Basically, I have one PS3 setup with the Logitech Driving Force Pro and play all my driving games on that PS3. This week, they have a deal where if you buy Dirt 2 and NFS Shift at the same time (at Best Buy) you can get a Logitech wireless steering wheel for $19.99 (it's normally $79.99 at BB). So, I did that deal just because I wanted to try out the wireless wheel. While I still prefer a steering wheel that can be attached to a table and that has pedals, the wireless wheel worked a lot better than I expected and it helped me a lot in Dirt 2 compared to the controller. It basically just sits in your lap and I thought that would be really unstable, especially with any sort of force feedback going on but it wasn't too bad. It has paddles on the wheel for the accelerator and brake and all the controller buttons on the front (including the PS3 button which my DFP is missing). The wireless wheel uses a USB port for the receiver (looks like a small thumbdrive) so that part is wireless but you do you have to plug in the wheel to an outlet (I guess to power the force feedback stuff). It has a really long power cord though and the cord isn't very thick so it's easy to manipulate, hide, etc.. There may be other wireless wheels for the PS3, I just thought I'd mention something about the one I picked up this week as part of that deal. If you play a lot of driving games and have a setup that can accomodate it, I'd recommend getting a steering wheel with pedals (like the DFP, DFGT, G25 or G27). Also, the G25 (and I assume the G27 will be the same) are highly recommended by sim enthusiasts and are a step above the wired DFP and DFGT and provide an even more realistic option. But, if you can't accomodate a mounted steering wheel setup, the wireless wheels (imo) provide a better option than a controller and are quick and easy to setup. This wireless wheel only supports 200 degrees of rotation though where the DFP, G25, etc. support 200 and 900 degrees of rotation. |

I just tried using the wireless wheel with an automatic transmission but taking a look at the wheel, it looks like to me that they expect you to use the L1 and R1 buttons for shifting (so yes, to answer your question). They're placed on the wheel where you can easily press them with your thumbs as you hold the wheel. Where you'd normally find paddle shifters, kind of behind the wheel on other steering wheel setups, is where they have the paddles/levers for the accelerator and brake.

The audio queues help a lot too by giving you an idea of how the car is gripping and sliding across the road. They did a GREAT job on this game! |

However, not all games implement force feedback support or do it well. When it is done right though, it's well worth it. Logitech force feedback wheels are great with Gran Turismo games, and historically have been great with Codemaster games too. As for the G25 or G27 controllers, either one should be great. Isn't the biggest difference that G27 wheels are wireless? |

After playing the Dirt 2 Demo, I felt it was trying to be more like Motorstorm than an authentic Rally title. Very different from previous incarnations of Colin Mcray on the PS2.

Reviving an old thread.
Anyone able to help me get the Rush Hour Trophy. I need 7 other people willing to let me beat them in one race. I can help anyone else looking for this trophy too, if we just take turns once we all get into the same game. I can also help with the Win 5 Races trophy too. I need to level up to 30 so I will be playing online until I plat this puppy. |
