Lastly I fixed that so called wall of text you had problems with and no offense but it seems someone who owns 1 player and 33 blu's obviously doesn't really have too much background knowledge or first hand experience where they should be trying to correct or underhand attack my statements, or spread false knowledge on a forum.
This is the internet information age. Within days of the release of the Onkyo 606, multiple AV forums were discussing a hum issue many people were experiencing. Many people who frequent AV forums are quite aware that some Panny BD60 owners have freezing issues, especially with dual layer discs. Was it the Onkyo 806 that some people had blue dot issues at release? My point is that the number of units sold does not seem to have a huge impact upon information dispersal when it comes to electronic product issues.

I've owned two BD players. My PS3 died out of warranty, so now I have a BD60. I own more than 33 BD's.... I've not updated my catalogue in quite a while.... but I've Netflixed FAR more than I own. But more important than that, I read and retain a lot of AV information from various sources.

The OP asked for opinions about which people prefer.... the PS3 or a standalone. I stated I prefer standalone because I believe that most in the PS3 price range will be a more reliable product, based upon the best estimation currently available for the PS3 failure rate. You state that you do not believe the 10% failure rate is inflated, so why then would you take such issue with the stance that many standalone players do not suffer that high of a failure rate?

I stand by my opinion (and when are opinions ever wrong) that if the OP is looking strictly for a BD player, a standalone might better suit his needs. The OP is free to give whatever weight he wants to my opinion, or completely ignore it..... as are you.

Here's just one link to the poll I have referenced, but if you look up "360 54% failure," you will find many more.... in fact it was discussed in the OT section of these forums.

3) Picture Quality is going to be very close.. maybe minor improvement with the Oppo at twice the price of a PS3 but not worth it in my opinon unless you have a lot of money and don't care about other options the OPPO doesn't give you that the PS3 does.

4) PS3 gives you games of course but more important is the fact that you can stream audio/pictures/video to it from a PC, from its hard drive, or a usb drive. Streaming is something the way more expensive OPPO can't do and at twice the price you would think it would.

Overall it is hard to beat the PS3's abiltiies and price.. you can go cheaper with cheaper players but you don't get as much either.. is fine if you don't care about the extras the ps3 has.
Well said. Thanks.

You again misunderstood what I meant all I meant was with 20+ mill. Units sold 10% is gonna be known where as a SAL which has 25-50 thousand sold 10% is such a small number it's unlikely it will be as widely publicized. I don't know though I constantly hear of bricked players especially due to firmware updates and I've never heard of this with the ps3, so all I am saying is there are just as many failures if not more with SAL's, and I could be wrong but last time I read a % of ps3 failure rates it was well below 10%. Oh and by the way all Onkyo's had the blue dot issue but the one most widely affected was the 606.

This is spot on.
The PS3 was head and shoulders above all the standalone players until recently. The disadvantages of heat, noise and power consumption were offset by great picture quality. However time & technology march on!
The new king of the mountain is the OPPO:
Almost silent
Very low heat signature
Matches PS3 for load times
Superb DVD upscaling
Comes with HDMI cable & two great TV tune-up discs
Best packaging and customer service in the industry
Don't believe it? ... ask the man who owns both!

So out of your list.. you really just trying to say the OPPO upscales dvd's better? Even that is near mute point because the PS3 already upscales quite well... whatever difference there may be is going to be very small.

My PS3 is already completely silent and always has been in the 2 years I have owned it, doesn't have any heat issues, loads fast of course, upscales DVD's great.

If you want to talk up the OPPO I would probably talk about its SACD and DVDA audio playback and perhaps if you feel it has slightly better picture quality or something.. but nothing from your list is an improvement really over my PS3.

Reasons I would not want an OPPO is the very high price and the fact that it can't stream like my PS3 can.. and for the price that should of been included.
If it had DLNA streaming ability it would be a major plus and I might even consider it by moving my PS3 to the kids TV and getting the OPPU for the living room but I will never buy another player that does not have DLNA.. that option is KING in my book.
