Am currently watching this in the UK on BBC HD channel.

Amazing, simply amazing. One question I have though is why in the US would they loose Sir DA voice and replace with Oprah Winfrey? lol Seriously why would they not keep his voice?

Yes, the Americanized version of Planet Earth aired on Discovery and was narrated by Sigourney Weaver. And seemingly, was considerably less popular than the Attenborough version.

Discovery carries the Sigourney Weaver version:

I dont recall seeing it carried in many/any other locations though, but have seen the Attenborough version all over the place. Im not too concerned the same wont happen with "LIFE".

Did you import the UK version? This is encoded in 1080/50i? Does that mean that, unlike the US PS3, the US Panasonic DMP-BD60 players are compatible with 1080/50i and does it output at 50i or 60i to the TV?

1) They shorten the documentary here for commercials. A new naration is needed to make things flow properly with the shorter running time.

2) US does not know the metric system. So things like this creature can grow to 3 meters and 75 kilograms. It can run up to 50km/h makes no sense to American audiences.

3) I suppose they could get Sir DA to redo the naration, but networks here likely (accurately) feel that American audiences will respond more favorably to a more familiar voice and dialect.

That said, I will always prefer the Sir David version...

I think you are right on the money wrt the new US narration. Point #2 is precisely why I am hoping Canada gets the Sir David Attenborough narration (being metric and all); or at least confirmation that the UK version is playable here.

Yes. I imported UK version from Amazon UK. Was going to use it on region free player and just for fun tried Panasonic. Works like a charm What extra nice is that extras also in HD!
I am not sure if it is encoded in 1080/50i, don`t know how to check.

Does it come with a slipcover, cardboard outer box or anything, or is it just a plain BD case? (UK version)

It depends.

Even though it is region Free, people on AVS Forum have said that it is encoded at 1080i/50hz, which the PS3 wont play.

My copy should be arriving sometime this week, and I'll check to see if it is 1080i/50

Is Wild Russia produced by BBC's Natural History Unit? The Animal Planet videos I found after googling are narrated by an American. And technically, I think the last "Wild" title was "Wild China" as Wild Pacific was the retitled "South Pacific."

There is a post on Blu-ray.com that states the Region A players that will play a region-free 1080i/50 BD and the PS3 isn't one of them. Several Samsung players will play and convert the 50 Hz signal to 60 Hz. Others output 50 Hz and that may be a problem for your TV. The Panny 60 is one of the ones listed as a "yes." Unless you are sure your BD player and TV can handle it, I'd pass until it comes out in the US. It likely will still be the "world" Warner/2 Entertain version with Sir David even if OW narrates the broadcast version.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. To others, the thread can be found at https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=95245

Unfortunately, it appears that Sony players are not capable of discs encoded in 50 Hz.

I got some interesting results when playing it through my BD-ROM drive on my laptop.

TotalMedia Theatre 3: Crashses. It will try to load it up, but then Windows will say that it crashed

Power DVD Ultra 9: Same thing as TotalMedia Theatre 3. Also, it seems that it likes to crash my graphics card a lot ( Raedon ATI HD 3650 )

Dell Media Direct: This one works, but I'm pretty sure the picture quality isn't as good as it should be. Could be the way that it's processing the video, dunno. But it works.

From what I've listened to, the audio track is much better than the Planet Earth one. It's a DTS-HD Track, though I cannot confirm if its Master Audio or High Resolution (HDMI port on laptop isn't 1.3 spec)
