Exactly. Toshiba Osborned HD DVD sales in January by announcing the A20 and allowing insiders to speculate that the A2 would drop in price when the A20 came out (since the A20 was only $100 more).

Sony is trying to generate demand NOW, and so this is the deal. And pssst, maybe it is limitted time only (maybe not). Smart from a marketing standpoint.

Things might change later, but for now Sony will deny any speculation. Again, that is smart.

Boy, I'll say! I hope SCEA clears this all up for everyone ASAP.

80GB (emulation for PS2)has to be less than a 60GB (EE engine for PS2) model to produce. So it makes sense to phase them out. Could be a great move to clear 60GB's. They are selling like hot cakes right now, makes sense as it is an increbible value.

That said, they do need to get lower prices than $499 eventually. I can only at this point believe they wouldn't price the 80GB on its own at $599 after the 60GB's are gone. Simply wouldn't make sense to be $100 more (not talking about the "Limited Edition" motorstorm pack) for 20GB's extra.

Next-Gen is a 100% reliable industry publication

It's simple. They have shitloads of expensive 60GB systems they need to clear, a million of them at last count. So they do it, get the yields up on the 80GB machine and get some more $599 sales in. They're waiting to see how much Microsoft drops.

Don't forget Capcom said that they expected another drop before Xmas, that way they can also do a "because you demanded it!" promotion.

SCEE, however, can not speak for SCEA.

Much like SCEA can not speak for SCEE...

Especially when you're looking at the European 60gb, which already did PS2/PSX emulation through software.

And here's a big thing folks seem to fail to realize. Even the hardware emulation isn't 100%, unforunately, solving the hardware emulation issues means switching at least that game over to software emulation... If ya think it's 100% effective, see how much fun FF5 is on the ps2 [and ps3, oddly enough, same bug]. Given that PS2/PSX games don't prefetch information that means at the very least, creating a software emulation layer to run the title checks...

I think that it will have to. Sony has to realize that the $599 price point was the reason no one was buying. Just because you add 20 GB of drive space and a game, the price is still above the price point consumers are willing to spend. If I couldn't afford it, or want to buy is at $599 before, what makes you think I will pay that price for 20 GB more and Motorstorm, generally speaking of course.
