Default Best Audio Demo DVD or BD?

Hello Blu-ray.com members,

I can see there are quite a lot of audio enthusiasts here so I was hoping to get some information on some really good music DVD or Blu-ray discs that could showcase high quality speakers.

I would prefer titles with a 5.1 track in DTS (or HD audio if in Blu-ray format).

Any recommendations? Also, if you do have a recommendation, which track/s in particular stand out?

A couple that I use regularly is Layla from the Eric Clapton - Live in Hyde Park DVD and also a few tracks from The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over DVD. They both bring any (good) speaker to life but I need more variety.

Definitely Eagles' Hotel California on the HFO dvd - a few more of my favorites with great mix include

Rush - R30 - 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition
Nine Inch Nails Live - Beside You in Time
Roy Orbison - Black & White Night
Los Lonely Boys - Texican Style (Live from Austin)
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - Live at the El Mocambo
An Evening with the Dixie Chicks
Elton 60: Live at Madison Square Garden
Carlos Santana - Plays Blues at Montreux 2004
Bob Marley & The Wailers: Exodus - Live at the Rainbow (30th Anniversary Edition)

Hi Shinrai!

I have 28 Concert BD's, many of which were reviewed on this site. So have a browse through them and see if there are any that may be of interest to you.

Thank you! I use the Hotel California clip on Hell Freezes over almost every time. The acoustic intro is fantastic. You should check out Layla on Eric Clapton Live at Hyde Park, it has a similar style... Acoustic solo intro blended into a great song. Both of these have sold many speakers for me!

I will definitely be checking out the others you recommended.

Queen Rock Montreal BD - Want to show off your surround capabilities? Check out "Now I'm Here" and the reprise a couple of tracks later. Want to show off the bottom end of your system? Go to the drum and typiany solo. All in all, this disc has everything, including some of the best tunes recorded.

Diana Krall: Live in Paris DVD - The ambience and sense of "being there" is great. I heard that this disc is one that a lot of professionals use to calibrate audio systems as well.

John Fogerty: The Long Road Home in Concert DVD - Great tunes and they really sound magnificant. The DTS track is one of the best.

I have that Queen on DVD and wasn't too impressed with the DTS mix - maybe the BD is better
Diana Krall is on my list to purchase - heard good things about it and John Fogerty - I didn't realize it had a DTS track on it - will have to check it out too

Wow. Really? This the first I'm hearing of someone being disappointed in the audio of the DVD. The BD sounds a little bit better, but it's not a night and day difference. The extra clarity and range is there to be sure though. You're sure it's the Queen Rock Montreal DVD you have?

If you don't like the DTS mix, the PCM stereo sounds amazing as well. Some prefer that to the DTS, but personally the sense of ambience and surround effects with the DTS make it preferred for me.

Another BD that has great acoustic work is John Mayer: Where the Light Is. He does an acoustic version of Free Fallin' that is great! Check it out!

Although you seem to be more about music concerts, I would recommend Termiantor Salvation. It has the most detailed, and simply put incredible sound design I have had the plessure of listening to. Whether you like the film or not, the sound will have you jaw on the floor.

On Blu-Ray my favorite is the 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame concert, especially Bruce Springsteen.

from the review:
Two thumpingly good lossless tracks are offered on this Blu-ray, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix and a DTS-HD Master Audio Stereo fold down. Both of these tracks set the bar wonderfully high for rock Blu-rays, with brilliantly clear fidelity, robust lows, full and ample middles, and crystalline, though never brittle, highs. (It should be noted that the special still contains a Dolby Digital 5.1 logo as it starts, but don't get worried, these Blu-rays do indeed offer only lossless audio). The humongous auditorium which is Madison Square Garden has some pretty overwhelming built in reverb, but while the 5.1 track certainly is spacious sounding, there's never any echo or in fact over the top audience noise to drown out the magnificent music. The great thing about this mix is how it is so faithful to quieter, almost quasi-acoustic sets, like the Simon & Garfunkel outing, to the amped up head banging excesses of Metallica. Through it all, surround immersion is virtually nonstop, instruments are discretely presented in individual channels, and vocals are always mixed perfectly into the overall soundfield. For a music release, this is most definitely a reference quality disc.

I would say Police Certifiable has to have the best audio I have ever heard that could be because it is one of the only Blu-ray's to have an English: Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (96kHz, 24-bit) track.

We need to have more concert Blu ray's with 96kHz, 24-bit tracks, the track depth on 96kHz, 24 bit tracks seem richer and deeper.

I say this time and time again, but it's worth repeating. Chris Botti: Live with Orchestra and Friends has some of the most amazing audio I've ever heard. As crisp as audio can be.

Ya, that's a good one too. The beginning overture with the strings made my jaw drop with how crisp and amazing the sound was.

Default Andrea Bocelli, Dave Matthews, Chris Botti

Andrea Bocelli, Dave Matthews, Chris Botti in that order! I like rock music but this stuff sounds much better on my Anthem Paradigm system.

A Paul McCartney concert dvd that is outstanding is "Back In The US". It's 6.1 DTS, and he does Beatles songs, Wings songs and some newer songs.

An outstanding documentary dvd, with some great music in it is one called "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown". It's also in 6.1 DTS. It's about a band called The Funk Brothers. They played on most of the big Motown hits you're probably familiar with. You just didn't know who the band was. They've played in more #1 hits than Elvis, the Beatles, and Rolling Stones............together! I can't stress just how good this dvd is, if you like that type music. I'll bet you like some of the stuff they've played.
