The old master was showing too much since the framing was showing the round corners. It's also wobbling a lot, quite dirty, and too agressively graded (you can .
You can also see how the finer clothes patterns are showing better definition compared to the older master :

Old Carlotta disc :
New Carlotta disc :

You can also see on this cap how the older master has a thicker grain field despite being a 4K restoration, while the newer one, despite having most likely been slightly grain managed, shows a much more typical texture. Finally, you can also see on this cap how the top of the frame was clearly showing too much.

My real complaint about the new master is that it's indeed a tad too dark.

I've already discussed that here.

Yeah that new Carlotta disc is a definite improvement IMO. I assume the BFI will use that new master and I'd be happy with that!

Anyone know of another place besides Amazon UK to preorder the new BFI disc for US people?

Has anyone here bought the new disc already? I'm looking to buy it but I would like to hear some opinions on A/V quality first.

It looks great, arguably better than the Criterion edition. Here are some screenshots: https://dvdprime.com/g2/bbs/board.ph...&wr_id=2296519

I received it last week and watched just the first few minutes to see how it looked, really impressed by it, and based on the few minutes I saw it's the definitive representation of the film. Taking a couple of days off work this week so planning to sit down and give it the time it deserves one of those days.

Just placed an order directly through BFI's store. Can't wait to experience this movie, the way I should have done (I've only watched bits and pieces throughout the years).

Default Screenshots comparison: BFI (2020) vs Criterion (2013)

I did comparison of new BFI and Criterion release. The new BFI release uses new 2017 restoration by Shochiku (according to booklet); while both are from interpositive (as original negative no longer exists), the new one is visible in better shape - no only visible scratches and other imperfections are gone (see the screens), but there is also more stable, uniform image where the image condition does not change so much as on Criterion.

I still have not watched the film itself in full (even though I have Criterion release for some time), so look forward to seeing it finally.

While this new BFI is for sure the best it's looked, I noticed some black, digital noise that would appear fairly frequently on people's faces and brighter areas of the image that was distracting. At first I thought it was a gnat on my TV screen but unfortunately not.

And I thought part of that essay by Joan Mellen was pretty ridiculous. She suggests that
[Show spoiler] Noriko isn't that enthused about getting another husband because her deceased/missing husband had been a bit of a drinker like his father. I don't understand how she could even arrive to that conclusion.

It's reddish to look like D65 on a monitor that's calibrated to D93, which was the oddball standard used in Japan for many years. This was also the case with inital releases of Spirited Away on DVD.

I snatched this a couple of weeks ago while it was momentarily at 5.99 but its been 'back in stock soon' for a fair while.

Some people have had a dispatch notice for it from HMV, I just got an email saying they're still awaiting stock so might be another week yet.
