I truly don't see how anyone can "regret" spending any amount of money on something that makes you happy, no matter what it is.
Most people don't hesitate to spend a ton of money on vacations, a vintage bottle of wine, a nice dinner, any of those things that are all disposable and gone a very short time after. I am not saying that steelbooks take the place of family memories on vacation, but if for some people it makes them happy to buy a steelbook for $100 + then I don't think they should be criticized for it. If nobody paid the high prices, there wouldn't be a market for $100+ SB's the simple fact is as long as there is a demand, there will always be a premium price to be paid. You can't walk into any store and buy a FS Iron Man or IAL, or John Rambo which is why they cost so much. You are paying for what you get, which is a rare collectible that the majority of people don't have, or don't have the means to obtain which is what makes your collection worth that much more. IMO |

Btw, remember when the Clone Wars steelbook was going for a pretty penny but the prices on that has dropped significantly when additional copies were found. I was able to get that for a forum member for 80$ shipped when most copies were being sold for about 150 or more.

$100+ is pricey but, i got a sealed IAL for $150 and an opened mint Iron Man for $110 about 2 or 3 months back. I have no regrets now for my purchases because if i didn't spend that money on these it would have gone to something else where i may or may not have had something to show for it.
Money comes and money goes..thats all i can say. Only you can decide whether or not your investment was worth it to you in the end. |

Damn, this thread is going nowhere fast.
I don't see what the problem is with spending over $100, and if anyone chooses to do it, cool. I personally just don't want to do it 'cos I know it will bother me. I am married, have a few brats, and even though I have other obligations and such, getting the money together to pull the trigger on the high dollar ones is not an issue for me. It's not like collecting Ferrari's or high end sports cars (the real ones, not the die-cast ones). If the desire to obtain an OOP steelbook means spending a few hundred to get it, and if it will make you happy, then by all means go for it. I just know from personal experience with collecting other things that over time, for me at least, that happiness fades away and the very thing that made me happy to finally get does nothing but remind me that I could have done something different with that money. Sure, it might have been a night out to a steakhouse with the family, a night of cards with friends, or a few more movies to add to the collection. I just know that it will bother me, especially if it's a movie that I'm either not a fan of or don't think it was that great. I don't concern myself with crossing my fingers and hoping it will triple in value later. I do consider it if there is one I have an extra of and want to trade it out, but my collection is simply something I want to enjoy in terms of watching the movie and enjoying a nice SteelBook to house said movie. I actually don't consider my growing SteelBook collection an investment at all. In fact, I actually consider them a complete waste of money, but it is money I have no problem spending because . . . it is my money. I can easily pick up all the movies in my SteelBook collection for ALOT less than what I've spent, and for some titles that are locked to Region B, I've actually gone through the trouble of getting the Region A release to add to the SteelBook. I think that is the primary reason why I have limits on how much I will spend, because honestly, I see it as simply throwing away money. I do it though because I like the SteelBooks. In the end, all we can do is decide on how we want to collect them, and hopefully, whatever choices we make are the right ones for us and those choices continue to make us happy. I've come across SteelBook Collectors (as well as Collectors of other objects) in the past that changed their thought process on how they want to collect them (or even stop entirely) because the way they were going at it was not bringing any joy, excitement, or pleasure out of it. It is obvious that right now, there are quite a few SteelBooks that command a triple digit price tag to get. Only time will tell if they will continue to stay that way or not. If Scanavo were to go out of business, and they stopped producing them, would each and every one of these little buggers then skyrocket in value, or would they plummet because there is no more to be had? What about the next big thing in media that is apparently always around the corner? I could go on with the speculations, but the point is, the only thing that is certain is that the future is anyone's guess. |

I'm someone who pays $200 for a DVD back in the days....
So from now on, I tell myself...if I didn't get it for retail or slightly above retail price, then just move on. I won't be chasing them anymore. Knowing me, I won't even watch it LOL. Sometimes, I wonder why I even bother as they will lose value after the next Grean-Ray technology comes around ![]() |
