The cost of shooting 3d will go down, filmmakers will grow more comfortable with it, and I suspect that you'll start seeing these films all over the place.
The question arises, how many theaters didn't show it in 3D? Sure 75% of the gross is from 3D, but did those people have a choice? what if the only theater showing it was one equiped with 3D, or worse, what if they only allowed theaters with 3D to show it. I saw Up in theaters in 2d and loved it. I can't see how having some leaves or balloons coming at me would have made such a well written and voice acted movie better. It has nothing to do with quality it is just a gimmick. something new and shiny that people forgot happened in the mid 80's.

but, hey, who knows? time will tell for sure. and in 5 years one of us can say "i told you so" and the other can just grumble.

Wow. I haven't seen this much misinformation in a single thread since the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray format war over at avsforum.

I agree with a couple different angles here.

Avatar in 3D is amazing - I've never been a huge fan of 3D movies, but this is it finally done right. I've never in my life gone to see a movie at the theatre (rarely go period), but I've gone twice to this one, and would likely go again in a couple of months. I experienced none of the headache/eyestrain/disorientation people have complained about - just totally enjoyed the ride. I would now go to the theatre to see any movie that lived up to this new standard - the technology will bring me, and I suspect many others like me, to the box office.

That being said, 3D at home just doesn't excite me that much, and I would really be surprised to see that catch on in a big way. Sitting around my living room wearing those glasses, looking at a much smaller screen - I dunno, doesn't have the same appeal. I might like it for some things, but meh, I would not be running out to upgrade my current television for it.

So in terms of theatre movies, I don't think this is a fad that will die down - I have very little doubt people will be clamouring for more of that for years to come. On the home side though, though I'm sure we'll see companies try to capitalize on it, but I predict little success.

I can see this standpoint. I will be seeing Avatar this weekend, so I will be able to talk first hand about the new 3D tech. But i know at home I tried to watch Polar Express in 3D and stopped after the first 3 mins. The colors were washed out and horrible and it was already hurting my eyes. put it on normal and it looked great.

Don't matter. It's not the cost of the glasses that raise the price.

thanks.... i actually found my answer on AMC websitre....

http://getsatisfaction.com/amc_theat...t_amc_theatres

Its pretty ridiculous with how much movies cost as it is... but my solution is... by a ticket for the regular movie... bring your own glasses... and go in the 3D movie

I can't answer you for a fact, but unless you have the new glasses I wouldn't bother. the blue/red ones are for home viewing for the time being. The theaters have some sort of newer "better" set. If you get to keep those and you have them from a past movie this year, then I don't see why not.

all they will do is give you an extra pair. Like it was said, bringing your own won't lower the ticket price.

It's not really anything new by the way, polarized glasses were used for 3d movies even in the early 50s.

It's a gimmick. 3-D has been around since the 50's and has never gone "mainstream" so there's no reason on earth to believe it will catch on this time around. It's a cool thing for an event movie like Avatar, but to think people will be putting on glasses in their homes to watch TV channels and movies all the time is a stretch IMHO.

That's a bit short-sighted. The technology used to produce and exhibit 3d movies is drastically different than what was used in the 50s.

thanks guys. I was just checking since these theater glasses fit perfectly over my glasses and I've tried the others with my glasses on and it's a pain.

I know the basketball All-Star game was in 3-D if you went to see it in the theaters.

So, I guess the question is will the glasses that you get at the theater work at home in the future?.....when they come out with TVs and players later this year, or will you have to buy different glasses for home theater use? There has been speculation that they will charge alot of money for additional glasses for home theater use.

In the long run, I think 3-D will go the way of 8 track. I don't like it in the theater nor would I be interested in home 3-D, but who can predict the future?

not quite true. i loved watching it in 2D rather than 3D. personally it would have been better in just 2D. ( i watched it twice, once in 2D and other in 3D)

so people who've watched it- still disagrees. actually i know alot of people who agrees with me..

3d is a gimmik

so i hope Cameron doesn't get the wrong message here... :/ cuz im not buying the 3D version of the blu-ray.
