Question 3D Blu-ray Disc QUESTIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS and GENERAL DISCUSSION Thread

Got a quick question about a 3D blu ray? Ask it here. This has become a general discussion thread for everything that doesn't fit into any other thread here in the 3D movies forum or in the other 3D forums. If you've got a question, it's probably already been answered here somewhere! Here are some links you might find useful:

3D News and General Discussion - a great place to start

3D Hardware and Technology - everything that's not covered in 3D Players and 3D TVs, 3D Glasses and 3D Projectors e.g. Playstation VR and Darbees

Link to every 3D blu ray listed on this site

Search this forum for a 3D movie - remember to Search Titles Only if you get too many results

Is it region free? - it will say in the thread title, there's a guide to region coding in the first post here

Why are there moving black bars on the sides of some 3D blu ray movies?

What about 3D blu ray movies with moving black bars at the top and bottom (or 3D effects that go over the black bars) like you see in IMAX cinemas?

I heard about bad 3D conversions and that some 3D blu rays were released in other countries but not mine. How do I find a good 3D blu ray movie?

There are some 3D blu-rays I want to order from the UK, where should I order from? Amazon? Zavvi?

Is there a list of everything on 3D blu ray ever released?

How many 3D blu-rays/steelbooks do you own? How do you arrange your collection?

Is there a list of 3D movies rated by 3D strength? What is 3D strength anyway?

Where can I talk about collectible packaging? - slipcovers, steelbooks etc

What animated shorts (cartoons etc), trailers and other 3D extra features have been released on 3D blu ray?

All the above was added by a moderator. This is the original post, referring to Beowulf (which thankfully was eventually released region free on 3D blu ray in some countries):

Why wasn't this made available in 3D like The Polar Express and Journey to the Center of the Earth. IT"S THE BEST 3D MOVIE OF THEM ALL! Please somebody explain that to me. Then someone else, FIX IT! C'MON movie people!

Have you seen the 3-D on Journey to the Center of the Earth and Polar Express? Have you seen the threads complaining about how bad the presentation is? It is not going to look like it looked in the theater. Current televisons and Blu-ray players cannot duplicate that and the studios use the horrible two colored lenses. At times the 3-D was okay, but at other times there was way too much ghosting of images and was very distracting. I would be content to wait until the technologies are up to standard before they release anything else in 3-D.

Yes I would far prefer newer polarized technology to the headache inducing anaglyph option. I can wait.

I'm with you Vietmary. I keep waiting for Beowolf in 3-D to come out on blu-ray. I love this movie. It would be eye-popping in 3-D. I have no problem with those cardbord 3-D glasses. I must say, though, that I preferred the turquoise / magenta color lenses used on Journey...Center...Earth over the red / blue used in Polar Express (and most recently on the oldray DVD release of Friday the 13th 3-D).

Until full color 3D in the home is possible Beowulf looks on Blu-Ray as good as its going to get. Anaglyph 3D would neutralize the colors and create annying ghosting effect. The amazing effect you see in the theaters is the result of the latest circular polarization technology. Panasonic is rumored to be bringing a similar effect to home theater in 2010 but even if they did it would requires special equitment. Anaglyph 3D is an ancient technology from the 1950s and even though it works on all HDTVs its just not much to get excited about. I have seen The Polar Express 3D Blu-Ray. Though probably the best home 3D presentation avalible it still had poor colors and a ghosting effect. My advice is to just buy the 2D Blu-Ray. Its a reference quality transfer and until full color 3D is possible its as good as it gets.

Default 3D movies

Question. These movies that came out and are coming out on Blu-ray that are in 3-D. Can you use the Real 3-D glasses you get at the theater or do you have to use the ones with the blue and red lenses?

I suspect when 3D-capable players come out, they'll be quite capable of producing anaglyph output...
the current "3d" blu-rays are all anaglyph. the forthcoming 3d format will support other technologies, but without the proper display you aren't going to get much use out of your glasses.

The theatre glasses are not functional on current Blu-ray 3D releases. Current Blu-ray 3D releases require the anaglyph red/blue glasses and will function with only those glasses. There is no way around that.

The 3D tech that's used in the theater will be released this year for home theaters. I've seen it in action and it looks amazing.
