I'll never forget hearing from someone who saw Titanic in the theater, and some dude in the back at one point yelled out "Oh shit, that boat gonna sink!!"

It might be an urban legend, but I love it and it exemplifies your point: shut up during the movie.

That said, I look forward to the day when my kids ask me questions during movies.

I don't think I have seen that movie. Is it a John Woo flick?

I always check to see what extras are on the disc first, as sometimes the listing on the back of them doesn't always go into full detail. And I always watch the trailer first if it's contained on the disc.

#1. If I'm watching a movie I've never seen before, I watch it alone. Too many times has someone either asked questions, blabbered through it or interrupted my concentration of a film so now I watch them alone for first time viewings. And yes, that means i don't go to the theater I HATE the theater.

#2. Asking questions during a film. Do people have no sense of what a thriller / mystery is anymore? Damn ADD riddled kids who can't wait another 30 minutes for an answer.

#3. All lights off.

#4. I don't read the back cover (mainly of TV shows) because it tends to give away major plot points. I'm currently watching The X-Files for the first time and all the seasons have major moments on the back! Not everyone who has bought the seasons has seen the whole damn show!

#5. I watch the film in its entirety. I'll never forget the day I had to call in sick to work because I had no idea Gangs of New York was a 19 hour movie

I need to know how long it is before I watch it. And even though it may not be in the OAR when I watch it (recorded off the television, or something) I still need to know what the OAR is, and how it was shot. For example, if it's shot in Super35, I also need to find out if the broadcast is opened up or cropped. I hate myself when I do that, but I can't help it.
And probably everything else listed here.

I think I have all of these tendencies.
  • Love a snack/meal.
  • Dark (if someone turns on a light down the hall or something I get irritated).
  • Talking (mainly my wife asking questions about things that the movie hasn't answered yet - my response, "I don't know, I'm watching the same movie you are.")
  • People leaving and having to explain things when they get back. (Why does this happen? Cause they go to the kitchen or bathroom and so, "Don't stop it, I'll be right back!"). I've learned to stop the movie no matter what.

The biggest one these days - watching a DVD instead of a Blu-ray.
(Example of why this might happen - we were done with a Lost disc and there was no Blu's available for the next disc; and my wife couldn't wait, so we got the next one on DVD at blockbuster. It annoyed me that I knew it could look/sound better the entire time.)

If I'm trying to show a really great movie to someone who insists on texting during the film, they get one warning. The second time they get a tyler durden ear punch.

Must be dark
Must have a snack and some good whiskey or polish vodka
No let's catch up on what I missed

Probably the most annoying thing ever!
Some movies I watch at home to avoid that sort of thing..

It's the same thing as farting out loud during dinner.

I totally agree with people talking, of course. I swear almost every time I go to a theater, the one person with a loud mouth has to sit near me. That's why I rarely go to the theater any more. The last one was Avatar and the guy right behind me was laughing really hard and making comments during the trailers and I was thinking, yep, once again I'm f'ed. Then he pretty much shut up during the movie, so that was nice.

I don't mind people sleeping so much, unless they snore. My wife ALWAYS falls asleep during every movie we watch on the couch. It used to annoy the hell out of me, especially when I was trying to show her a movie I really like. Now I just expect it and when she lies down and closes her eyes, I turn it off and we watch the rest the next night. I'm a big fan of watching long movies in pieces.

This is why I have quite watching previews. Why would you give away a major plot twist OF YOUR OWN MOVIE!

Nice thread, Q! Reminds my of a thread I made a while ago with a lot of really interesting (albeit weird) ideas.
  • Like bearcat, I typically refrain from reading the back cover of a blind-buy.
  • I prefer watching dramas by myself, although I almost never watch comedies alone.
  • I have to sit on the same place on my couch.
  • I leave horror movies for night-time.
  • I also have to watch TV shows in their entirety, or at least within a small time frame.
  • If I happen to be eating, I also would need it to be perfectly ready before the movie starts.
  • I hate missing dialogue, so I have a habit of rewinding every time someone talks, which isn't a bad idea because it always gets them to shut up. (I also will sometimes pause the movie until their done which makes them uncomfortable )
  • I love seeing movies while they're in theaters so I end up dragging my gf to see strange movies like Dr. Parnassus.
  • I try to overlook flaws and enjoy any movie I'm watching unless it's overwhelmingly bad.
  • I always check to see what the in-movie menu looks like
  • I really like Wolverine's idea of skipping back chapters to avoid the sometimes unskippable 30-second FBI warnings.

Pet-peeves:
  • When someone asks the most ambiguous question during a movie that you know would take a minimum of 2 minutes to answer so you try to ignore them.
  • Hate it when someone leans over and says "Oh man, he's gonna die, haw?" COMPLETELY ruins the experience. ARRGH!!
On that note, I try not to predict how movies will play out in my head as I'm watching them. It's just a personal preference. I'll pick up on cues/foreshadowing/metaphors, and follow the story and characters as they develop, but I try not to anticipate anything so I could "watch in the present" and enjoy the flow of the movie. Otherwise, many aesthetic movies would just fly over your head if they don't go by formula. However, if it's an obvious predictable-natured film like Taken, you can't help but already know that somebody's going to pay!

Ouch, that is a MAJOR no-no! Watching a trailer, especially right before seeing the movie is like wanting to get the Cole's notes version of the flick so you can skip the next 2 hours!

Trailers suck these days, give away waaaaay too much

+1 for the Tyler Durden reference
and +1 for the texting issue. I forgot to mention it myself, but damn, nothing bugs me more. I have a friend who ALWAYS wants to come over and watch a movie (because i don't lend out my blus, they have to come to my house) but as soon as we start a movie her f*cking phone keeps going off! Even on vibrate I can HEAR it through the couch cushions and i can SEE the light from the damn phone when she's typing a worthless message.

She claims she wants to watch LOST, but I refuse to even try because I know she'll be too busy texting and will be confused in a heartbeat.
