I'm not going to rehash this again, but the gist of my argument is that with the majority of sales coming from DVD, Blu-Ray, VOD etc. that you'd think more films would come out in 1.85 or equivalent. Creating a movie like Gigli for example in 2.40 is retarded - in my humble opinion.

Are we really supposed to discuss with a clueless guy who knows nothing about movies...?

I personaly love what they have done with pre 80's movies on Blu-ray. Some of them just leave me Casablanca, Gone With The Wind, The Searchers, The Wild Bunch.....

I finaly get them with the right OAR and looking better then I ever got to see them. If you enjoy movies all of these should be a major selling point for upgrading them on BD.

Sound and 5.1 is not so important to me. I know that is also a big step however, HD, clarity...again make's that older movies look and sound better then I ever been able to see them.

As Betaman said, I actualy get a bigger WOW factor watching these older movies then the more recent ones. I never seen Casablanca looking and sound as incredible as it now does on my BD copy. For a movie fan like myself it's pure treat, like candy for a kid.

Some directors like Robert Rodriguez think this way, but are you seriously suggesting you want Star Wars or Lord of the Rings cropped? Again this all about YOUR tv, my home theater is scope and I'm not demanding all film makers cater their AR's to fit perfectly on my tv/projection screen.

Deciding on how to frame your movie is a very personal choice for a filmmaker and it really depends on the kind of film they are making. Watching any "epic" film in a narrowed 16x9 sounds almost as absurd as watching one in 4:3. and a lot of people had the same complaints about "wide screen" dvd's back in the old age of standard def.

We should let the filmmakers decide how the movies look, not the guy who just got a new tv at best buy. These films are timeless and will be around for the next display technology. Who are any of us to say what the AR will be for displays 30 years from now. If you would have said 15 years ago all new tv's would be 16X9, many would have called you nuts.

A few decent, insightful posts. Much thanks to those people.

The rest is just the typical juvenile bashing I've come to expect on here.

Err, what??? One of the best things a distributor can do is obtain the OAR. What would you want to mess around with it??? Just because YOU want to fill the screen. Not good enough. Let me reiterate my post, stretching the image means losing part of the image.

BTW ---- Gigi was made years and years ago. So when you get that time machine then go back and ask them about the OAR.

he said Gili. and anyone who buys that movie on any format has a lot more personal issues beyond what the OAR might be.

It's not that I said I didn't like them, I just find it hard to believe they're going to look amazing. Yes some releases (Criterion comes to mind) spend a lot of time and effort when they release a movie on Blu.

But I'd guess for the majority of studios they just go through the motions in pumping them out - the number of people b*tching about certain companies would seem to indicate that is in fact the case for the majority of stuff that comes out.

I am not entirely against re-instituting a standardized aspect ratio (cropping is an unspeakable evil so don't lump me in with that), but regardless, films are seen first in theaters, where scope is a more enveloping experience, and that's what filmmakers have in mind. The theatrical experience is what's going to drive the home video sales.

For me its not the extra channels I care about. Its the restored/cleaned up audio that I care about. Its cleaner, clearer, crisper. Better.

i guess what im confused about is you talk about them like youve never seen an old movie on blu-ray while acting like people who look forward to old movies on blu-ray are crazy. film resolution hasnt changed that much so why should the age of the movie make a difference?

again, which movies have you seen that make you feel this way.?
