There is plenty of room for the original mono track on the BD disc.
If the director is personally involved in the production of the BD, then I will be happy with what he provides. But it would still be nice to have the original mono audio. Its the same type of question for me, regarding Open Matte, I know the films were intended to be cropped at a later stage, but if its filmed with a 4:3 ratio, why not just show it like that instead of cropping it down to 1.78:1 or 1.85:1.

While they should absolutely include the original mono, the 5.1 remix for Terminator was not done by "some technician". If you do you homework you will find out that it was done by Gary Rydstrom and his folks at Skywalker sound under supervision and commissioned by James Cameron, who also approved the 5.1 mix. This was done by Cameron at al shortly after Terminator 2 by the T2 sound team.

It doesn't get more official than that 5.1 remix. But again, they should include the mono original as well.

Cameron has to realise that Terminator cant just die off like it is..
He's already said in the past that he is done with Terminator. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for him to buy the rights back. I'm sure we'll see more Terminator from someone.

It looks like Terminator is now no longer properties of Sony or Lionsgate.

Wow. Not even a movie studio owns the rights now. So it might be years before we see another Terminator movie.

I'm starting to get tired of these re-releases! I only spent $10 on T1, but it's the principle!

Gotta say +1. Before long I'll need to be replacing my shelves full of blu-ray's with newer, remastered, better versions. I know I don't HAVE to replace them but knowing there is a better version available would nag on me. The studios are definitely following their dvd trend of all the dipping.

If it worries you so much, don't buy discs with room for improvement. A very popular film with an old MPEG2 encode: 100% chance of double-dip.

Another Terminator? Jeepers!

When Arnold uttered his famous line, "I'll be back" he wasn't kidding.

He's been back more times than jwbbud at an all-you-can-eat buffet!

[Show spoiler] Of course I'll get a copy.

Most movies shot in 1.85:1 are open matted, so you want all of those opened up, even though many aren't supposed to be viewed that way?
And yes, the original soundtrack should always be included. A remix is fine and all, but I want the original sound too in lossless. Can't be too much to ask.

One thing to keep in perspective. Terminator was a relatively low budget movie. A new transfer is welcomed, but it is not going to make the original film a reference quality Blu-ray.

Post The Terminator Rights Have Been Sold!

In related news the rights to the Terminator franchise have been sold to the former right-holder's creditor, who appears to be offering it to Sony and Lions Gate, to make back the money they lost.

I would like one company to own the home video rights to all the movies so that a set can be released with consistently excellent A/V quality and extras. I don't care what movies they make in the future.

But I want access to the original soundtrack.
You do realize that we're talking 1983/4 here, don'tcha? Back when most movie theaters only had a single mono speaker box behind the screen. Hell, my home town cineplex still has that in I think 3 of its 4 theaters.

Compare this to the Lowrey Bond remasters a couple years ago. Most of the original Bond films had only mono sountracks, and yet all were given new 5.1 DD & DTS re-mixes on the DVDs and I suppose DTS-MA on the BDs. Yet, most people didn't complain about that.

In fact, I liked the 5.1 mix on the Terminator SE DVD. Yeah, sure some sounds were mucked up, but they can fix those errors with just a proper mix, or even improve them with modern sound effects, I don't see a problem with that.

The US & Canadian Ultimate Edition DVDs feature:

DD & DTS 5.1 Audio plus the original mono/stereo/stereo surround soundtracks.

The US & Canadian Ultimate Edition Blu-ray Discs feature:

DTS-HD MA 5.1 Audio plus the original mono/stereo/stereo surround soundtracks.

Going further both the Ultimate Edition DVD and Blu-ray Discs also feature the original burned-in subtitles.
