I'm surprised no one here has mentioned Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones. His drumming in Sympathy For The Devil and Paint It Black were quite unique and exceptional.

You're absolutely correct. His name is: Proscriptor McGovern (Russley Randell Givens) and he's a monster behind the kit. I saw Absu live twice last year, and he tore it up live both times. I don't know where he gets the energy to drum like that and do vocals as well. It's insane.

And Flo is also in his own world. He's on a different level from most other drummers that's for sure.

That was a good one. But all jokes aside, the man is a legend. He has played for some of the best metal bands out there in his long and prosperous career. I don't know how he can do some of the things he does behind the kit considering how big he is. It's truly impressive.

Forgot to mention Thomas Lang and Virgil Donati. Very surprised other drummers in this thread haven't brought them up yet.

Question What about............

Billy Cobham
Lenny White
Tony Williams
Alex Acuna

These drummers were the foundation of some serious Jazz/Rock fusion bands and all excellent in their own right ...... And I do like

Bill Bruford
Chad Wakerman
Dave Weckl
Tony Bozzio
Phil Collins

I almost forgot about Mitch Mitchell from the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He was a beast when playing on Fire.

Yeah, Gene is the man. I was reading this interview he did for a college radio show back when Strapping Young Lad was touring behind Alien and the interviewer asked him what his favorite song was to play live, to which he responded "Shitstorm" because "that shouldn't be able to be done." Then he said, "Legs this fat should not be able to go that fast." Gotta love his humility and self-deprecating sense of humor. I am glad that he's finally receiving a payday by drumming for Dethklok.

Yeah, the new Fear Factory is definitely a return to form for them. I think all the drama between Burton and Dino versus Raymond and Christian really lit a fire under the former's asses. Gene's drumming is just the icing on the cake. I hope this forces Raymond and Christian to step up their game because I've listened to Arkaea and I just didn't really care for what I heard...

I didn't even know Hoglan joined FF and the other 2 started a new band until after seeing posts on here. There's a link on FF's website for an Arkaea video. The lead singer sounds literally like a carbon copy of Linkin Park's vocalist, so that was a turn-off right there.

I really like watching Danny Carey. I'm also developing an appreciation for Joey Jordison.

Skill-wise he was OK, but his drums sounded awful. I have pictured him playing on garbage cans. Example: "Manic Depression" - yow!

His timing in "Manic Depression" is pretty unique, considering the fact that the song runs on 3/4 beats per measure. "If 6 Was 9" and "Crosstown Traffic" are other good examples of Mitchell's drumming technique. Oh, and don't forget that the guy pioneered fusion drumming.

No questioning his technique and ability, but he could've used a drum tech.

I could agree with you there. Mitchell may have technique and ability, but he sure does lack a unique drum technique like Bonham's loud, thunderous drum sound and triplets, and Moon's cascading tom rolls.

I put Mitch Mitchell, Keith Moon, Bill Ward, etc. in the "sloppy but great" category. I'd add Nick Mason to that list, but I just can't stand his playing. It makes me cringe.

I doubt Nick Mason has any technicality, nor speed and power like the other drummers you've mentioned.

No doubt he's known for his fast speeds on his hi-hats. HE was a bassists' greatest dream, and Sting was glad to have him by his side in The Police.

Anton Fig is one of my favorites and is sooooo underrated! He plays with David Letterman's late night band but he used to be in Ace Frehley's solo band in the 80's. What's so cool about him is that he kind of plays drums slightly on the backbeat. Here's a great video of him playing on the song "Breakout" and he has some good moments!!
