Optimum region B locks all their Blu-ray releases except for a few of their very earliest Blu-ray releases...

Not to come off as too rude but that wasn't my question. GGX, on the other hand, you're breaking my heart here...

It's still going to look better than the DVD blown up on my 100" screen, so these reviews mean nothing to me. If you are watching on a 42" plasma, then of course you won't see a clear difference.

My copy is en route to the States. I'm sure others will get theirs first to check region coding.

Me too, screenshots are disappointing. But maybe we couldn't expect a lot from this one.

Yeah I'm perfectly happy buying it knowing full well nothing could of been done due to the source. And I love this movie I cant go wrong with anything by David lynch (well except for Dune which even Lynch himself considers his one failure).

You're killing me softly! Post it already, I beg of you; I want to order it before the price jumps, if it proves to be viable for Region A...

The disc was shipped a couple of days before the street date, but it has not arrived yet. When it does, of course, a review will be immediately posted

I predict:
1) No gain in actual resolution--for well-known reasons--but possible elimination of video artifacts inherent in the low res source which would have tripped up the mpeg2 encode on the dvds, ala 28 Days Later. The differences between the dvd/bd image would thus be subtle and not apparent without direct screencap comparisons, again like 28DL.

2) Immersive lossless audio that will trump the dvds (think of all the LFE usage in this film), and warrant a purchase by many for that upgrade alone.

3) A must have for all us Lynch fans who don't buy DVD's anymore... and have sold off their collection.

I'd be okay with this. Not expecting my copy from Amazon UK any time soon, though, thanks to the volcanic spewing into the sky and preventing transcontinental flights...

As Audio seems to be the relevant factor here: could someone please check the bitrate of the master-track (kbps)?

this is not accurate, as there are many recent releases that are not locked only to region b.
they include "The Ladykillers", "Highlander" and "The Deer Hunter" "Le mepris", and numerous others.
they are coded AB so can obviously be played in region A players.
http://www.blurayregioncodes.com/index.php?region=b
studio chosen "Optimum" from drop down menu.
I would say that it is indeed likely that this release is locked though.

Just watched it and I can confirm that it is Region B locked. My Oppo wouldn't play it when set to Region A. Needed to set it to Region B in order to watch it.

The dts HD MA 5.1 audio track hovers around 3 Mbs.

Image quality is not such that you would use it to show off your home cinema, however, it still betters the Region 1 NTSC DVD which I popped in to compare. DVD, of course, upscaled to 1080p as my Runco only accepts 1080p signals so the comparison was fair regarding resolution.

Hope this helps before a proper review is published.

To my knowledge this was shot on film. If so, it would look great on Blu-ray.

Disappointing as hell about the region-locking but, yes, this has been greatly helpful for me. I'll be removing it from my wish list presently.

It wasn't shot on film, it was shot digitally (Lynch talked about his move to digital when this was released quite a lot) and not in a very high quality either.... more discussion on this earlier in the thread.
