Beta,

When I bought my PS3 it was the cheapest Blu Ray player available. (The only other player on the market was the Samsung BDP-1000 with MSRP $1100.)

I originally played ZERO games because I used a CRT FP back then and didn't want problems with burn in.

I'm really not much of a Video Game player and never wanted to be spending countless hours playing video games. So... something like an OPPO player could happen to me eventually. (Esp because many Oppo players play SACD which is important to me.)

I'm not anti-fun though and the PS3 does a lot even if you don't use it for games. I do like some games.

The PS3 was the nest BR player for a few yrs, but not anymore.. The oppo is almost as fast.. Gives you a better picture with BR/DVD..Gives you tons of options, & is more versatile. That being said, I'd rather have my PS3 then my oppo.. The BR picture isn't THAT much better.. I love to game more then watch BR, & I love to surf the web lying down on my bed.. So, yes, I prefer the PS3 over the oppo.

I have the original PS3, backwards compatibility and all, plus the Oppo.

For your setup you will notice a difference in BD quality with the Oppo. In addition its ability to upscale DVD's is significantly better than the PS3.

If you want the best BD/DVD performance buy the Oppo. If you can only have one of them keep the PS3 as it does a decent job on BD and you can play some great games

I have Both. Matter of fact I have a slim, an original 60gb, and an OPPO BDP83. I love my OPPO but if I had to have only one it would be the PS3 slim. The slim can do many things with ease the OPPO just can not. First of all the slim can bitstream and switch to PCM on the fly so you canplay secondary audio, it's actually the only player that can do this. The loading of movies is at least one third faster with any model ps3 although the OPPO is acceptably fast especially on start up, but I think most new model players released this year have caught up. If you're ever going to go 3D the ps3 is the only player presently available that will be able to be firmware upgraded in June to display 3D. I've called OPPO and they have announced there players can not and they will need a whole new player made. When it comes to upconversion Home Theater Magazine reviews the PS3 slim last issue which produces same as old model results but through firmware Sony has improved highly on upconversion and passed every visual test thrown at it since it's release in 2007. The magazine also stated the upconversion ability was very close to the OPPO's (which really surprised me). Two last issues with the OPPO it's like every other stand alone player and still runs BD Live slightly flawed sometimes and really needs the feature turned off to run flawlessly all the time and although mostly perfect sometimes has issues with java intense screens/menus, the PS3 never really has any issue with any film you throw at it. Now I might sound like I'm trying to convince you to not get an OPPO BDP83. I'm not, but if it's between one do not give the PS3 up unless you need Analog output, and film height adjustment for screen projection and another great OPPO feature is subtitle adjustment. Now even with all these little tiny issues the OPPO is still my favorite player and upconverts better then everything and anything I've seen, so if you want it, get it just don't expect the problem free movie watching you've most likely been getting with you ps3. Also let's not forget the fact that OPPO plays pretty much all media thrown at it which the fatter ps3 did too in regards to SACD playback but not the newer slim. I hope this is the definitive answer you're looking for.

Interesting. I do know my oppo is more reliable for BR playback.. Daredevil, & Kill Bill stopped working on my PS3.. Not sure why..

I'm going to bite the bullet and going to sell it to someone close. My dad has been wanting to buy it (mainly to use it for Rock Band and DJ Hero), however he'll buy it when he gets enough money and gets a full time job at the college (He works part time). So maybe in a few weeks unless if things don't work out so well. This also gives me a better chance of buying it back if I wanted to buy it back, so I'm now waiting now. I'm more concern if he gets the job though.

You should just be patient and wait for the new 2010 bd models to come out between May - July that will be 3D compliant and HDMI 1.4. They will have improved on all the flaws that previous generation bd players had and offer more online streaming features with faster loading times.

i would never trade in my PS3 for any stand alone bd player, the PS3 is just too elite. Its A Gaming console at that, kill 2 birds with 1 stone, and in addition the PQ is amazing. New things come out and sony just releases a firmware update. Cant go wrong with the PS3. Im all about the bang for my buck, im not into fads at all!! I want the best quality and versatility for my dollar.

Hey,

I just don't believe the claims that any player is better than a PS3.

And the PS3 does so many things. Playstation Network has a Video store where you can buy or rent movies in standard and High definition and also has tons of free content with updates every week.

PS3's Netflix streaming is second to none. I think it's the only one that lets you browse hundreds of titles not currently in your Netflix Instant Que.

I use my PS3 to see Media Servers on my network adding more content. It's crazy just how much value you get with a PS3.

Actually Microsoft let you do that long before the PS3 on their xbox, discless too I might add. The PS3 lacks a little when it comes to the smoothness of the 360's Netflix experience.

The PS3 is dead reliable, it's an all around good performer. Many stand alone players will offer just as good or just slightly better bd picture quality like the Pioneer Elite bdp-09fd, Oppo and especially better dvd upconversation. But the PS3 does somethings many stand alone players can't do like play video games and some additional online browsing features. I'm a movie enthusiast so PQ means the most to me and I like the Pioneer Elite's film like PQ even if it has slow load times.

Is this a personal attack? I'm not here to be preached to keep my PS3 or to be preached to buy the oppo, but I seen from my needs in my home theater that the Oppo would be more ideal to have. I can't watch some cinemascope foreign films (Blame Sony pictures) on my big CIH projection screen without subtitle shift, and the PS3 lacks that feature. Also I can't listen to the lossless audio channels from blu ray discs, and buying a really good quality HDMI receiver will cost me quite a bit of money (I'll admit that some of my equipment I bought are hand me downs from goodwill). I've lost interest in gaming and I'm not that interested in the streaming features it and other players offer.

I would like to thank everyone though for their support and help.

You can hear lossless with any ps3 slim or fat it just depends how you want it delivered to your speakers the fat decodes the lossless and the slim can bitstream to allow your AVR to decode.

I don't have a receiver with HDMI, I'm limited to lossy multichannel audio. I plan on using the multichannel analog outputs for the oppo to get lossless audio.

I run both a PS3 and Oppo 83 in my setup. The PS3 is dedicated to gaming while the Oppo does BD/DVD.SACD/CD duties.

I doubt that I would trade this configuration in for anything.

Now that you have stated that info, I'd say keep the PS3 for now and upgrade to a receiver with HDMI in/output.

Can you use the optical audio output? That's what I did before I got a new receiver: I ran the HDMI straight to the TV, and optical audio to the crappy old receiver.

I would think that in your situation a new receiver would be a higher priority than an Oppo BD player.
