You pretty much can't go wrong with any Zatoichi movies to get the samurai experience. They have humor, great action and no other films in the genre have a blind samurai/masseuse.

Kurosawa's great, but his later films always strike me as a little cold. I can appreciate them, but when I want to see "real" samurai, I always go to my favorite director Hiroshi Inagaki. His "Chushingura" is the best 47 Ronin version I've seen, and I've watched "Samurai Banners" more times than any other samurai film. That one on Blu-Ray would burn your eyes!!!
If you're looking for samurai being bad-ass with some comedy thrown in, look for anything by Kihachi Okamoto ("Red Lion" with Toshiro Mifune is great).
None are on BD but are available in Region 1 DVD's with great PQ.
Still, the best modern samurai film is "Hidden Blade."

BTW, take a look at "Stray Dogs and Lone Wolves," a FANTASTIC book about 30 or so samurai films.

My problem with the Last Samurai isn't really with Tom Cruise himself (as he turns in a decent performance), but rather the way how his character is forced into the plot. It feels like an unnatural and forced plot device to make a western actor the lead actor. Kinda like trying to squeeze a square peg in a round hole. At least, that's how I felt about it. I just wanted to clarify that as I didn't explain it well in my previous statement.

Just got confirmation from Amazon that my Yojimbo/Sanjuro Blu Set just shipped! Cannot wait. Plus, I only paid $18 for it. The other $30 was the "apology" money from Amazon for the whole Marvel Omnibus fiasco

I think these are considered Yojimbo remakes:
Fistful of Dollars (Leone/Eastwood)
Last Man Standing (Walter Hill/Bruce Willis)
