I don't think anyone is arguing that Blu-Ray has been defeated. The Paramount announcement has breathed new life into the war which will eventually destroy both formats.

If Fox had released top titles at full speed, the advantage could be 80:20.
So my point is, numbers could have prevented this.

Star Wars before Christmas would be the only thing to blow the paramount news out of the water. That would be a slap to HD-DVD that would sting for a long long time.

Anything else is too little, too late.

Really?

And had the Fox announcement occured LAST week? What then? You would be saying too little too late to Paramount, or looking for even MORE from Fox?

Anything else isn't a full counter blow, I would agree. But, this order of announcement is far better than the other way around.

Fox announces THEN Paramount drops the bomb. That would negate the Fox announcement.

This way does not.

Microsoft probably burned a lot of bridges by doing this. If they paid out more here than they previously offered anyone else, they'd offend the others and just for spite, those others would hold out for double that amount - IF MS starts negotiations with them. If MS never offered anyone else anything, those others would be offended. Any way you cut it, if I was any other major studio, I'd kick MS out the door before they even said word one to me.

Go get 'em Fox. I hope the BDA bury HD DVD this holiday season for good, despite the blow of the Paramount news. I think Blu-ray just might be able to execute this still with this renewed commitment by Fox, cheaper standalone player prices, and a bombshell price drop of the PS3 of $399.

That, would, IMO still acheive the inevitable demise of HD DVD albeit in more of a hurry.

Hell, numbers now should have prevented this. Microsoft is just abusing their monopolistic powers, pure and simple.

This is good. It helps with damage control. To be honest with you I did really hear Paramount, but I did hear transformers, I counld care less about most of the titles. Honestly Universal has better movies that I would rather see. I don't even have any paramount BD. Well get all the paramount movies we can handle when they realize that they chose the wrong side. Until then we can wait for INDY to go blu since the only Spielberg movie in HIDEF so far is going to be exclusively blu.

At this point I actually think LOTR is just as big a deal.

Although Fox is returning is great news.

It's sad that it took Paramount going HD-DVD only to get Fox back in the game.

Numbers are already very telling. The numbers could NOT have prevented this. On the contrary, the numbers have accelerate Microsoft's need to take such desperate measures. You clearly have very little concept of how this game is working.

Absolutely, their suspension of releases has let HD DVD back in when they should have been out cold. Still, if they get all this year's hits out day and date with DVD, and some strong catalogue titles as well, then perhaps Blu-ray can maintain the size of its lead in movie sales.

I'm not convinced. If we were seeing 80:20 now, and looking at 90:10 later in the year, I'm not so sure Paramount could have made their press statement credible. But when it's only 66:34, that isn't such an overwhelming advantage.

This is a fallacy. Fox was always going to be back in the game. Their annoucement was expected at the end of the month at IFA.

They are simply expediting the announcement to now. So, they're not getting back into the game simply because of the Paramount announcement. They are just announcing it sooner because of the Paramount announcment.
