Great news! I've been holding off an order from Amazon UK with both titles in it, waiting for a review and/or user comments.

Extras on Uk disc are in standard definition...a review elsewhere of the Australian (released by 'Shock') disc states extras on that release are in HD. I believe video bit rate on UK disc to be higher (maybe because extras are in SD?) tho so I expect it to look better.
However, Australian disc is region-free and UK disc is locked. Looking forward to comparison review.

Interesting. I still don't have the Australian disc to compare, but I can't see any real benefit in having the extras in HD - considering how they are sourced. This said, the UK disc looks terrific, and is clearly one of my favorite releases this year. Indeed, it should be an essential addition to any serious library.

It's also worth noting the UK release has more extras than the Australian (mostly additonal interviews), and the all-important english subs. According to cinemasquid the Australian oddly takes up slightly more disc space, in spite of the UK having more extras and a higher video bitrate. I suspect it's due to the higher bitrate soundtrack. I'm going to guesstimate little if any visual/audible difference between them. I personally think UK is the way to go here..

Yesterday I received the Australia disc and watched it today. The video transfer looks near perfect to me. It easily exceeded expectations on my projection system.

Can you tell me if the extras are in High Definition?

I understand that this Director's Cut is a few minutes shorter, due to the fact that some scenes have been removed.

My question is: are those deleted scenes included in this blu-ray release in the "special features" segment?

Well, I finally bought this blu-ray. I've never seen the film before and I'm glad I did. I like this Australian classic more than Walkabout.

Picnic Hanging Rock is a great Australian film! This is one of the best films about symbolism regarding loss of innocence, sex, and relationships. If I ever taught English or film or psychology, I would love to have a class study this film, as well as The Holy Mountain. Both films are actually simple and full of interesting symbolism to a point where it's not pretentious. There is nothing that mysterious about this "mystery film." The surface story or the "case not getting solved" doesn't matter - it's what's behind the story that counts.

What I like about Picnic at Hanging Rock, as well as The Holy Mountain, is that they both don't sacrifice the entertainment factor in order to be arty or symbolic.

The movie may feel a little long, but it's not a slow film. The way it's filmed is actually very exciting, especially with the great musical score. And a whole slew of attractive actresses doesn't hurt as well!

The blu-ray is perfect. I wish that all old movies could get such good blu-ray releases as this one.

I've never seen Gallipoli (which is strange because I do love Mel Gibson as crazy as he may be)...is that a blind-buy if it comes out on Blu-ray?

It's in a standard case; no slip and no booklet. Also the case is "U.S. style" slimmer BD case rather than the thicker standard UK case.

Todd,

Yeah I think so, and going by my understanding of your tastes, I think you should like it. The R1 dvd is pretty good if you dont want to wait though.
