I knew I was going to upgrade. As soon as I got HD OTA, I wanted satellite/cable in HD. As soon as I got HD cable, 480p dvd just didn't cut it anymore. I was just very patient in waiting to see which format won.

Same here. I already had a PS3, so I figured I might as well upgrade since I had the option.

What kept me from upgrading was that all the BD displays I had seen looked like bad soap operas. I had seen blu-ray, I think specifically Pirates of Caribbean, and thought how horrible it looked and told myself I would never upgrade to BD if they all looked so awful and plastic. Then reading online forums and articles I realized that all the sets in Best Buy etc... had that "tru-motion" junk setting turned all the way up. I went in one day and asked the clerk there to give me the remote. I took all noise reduction and 240mz settings off and was sold. Even the clerk said, "wow that looks so much better."

After walking into Future Shop and watching a bit of Transformers on one of their setups and being left speechless with the quality of the picture. That's when I told myself that I would save up to upgrade my hardware and go Blu.

I got a Playstation 3 and my first blu ray was Inglourious Basterds. And have been slowly amassing more blu rays since.

Sometime 2008 me and my then-gf were at Circuit City looking at HDTVs when we noticed that same "soap opera" look to it. And yes they were playing clips from Pirates of the Caribbean. I thought it looked awful and looked into it.

Thankfully I found out that's not really how it was supposed to look, and soon after bought a nice big Sony.

As for what movie made me do it? I have to say The Dark Knight. After seeing the opening sequence I just knew it was time to upgrade.

I probably would've upgraded sooner but I was waiting for the format war to be over, and prices to go down.

I came across a Sony store back in december 08 and they were playing The Fifth Element on a 50 lcd tv, i didn't say anything about blu ray, and thought it was the TV that gave that pristine image, so i asked the guy what kind of tv that was, and he said, well the TV is good, but the movie is a blu ray.

Then it all happened so fast, till today :P

If i didn't see that store i would not be spending 2 hours at least per day looking for movies on the net

I never took part in the format war but in early 2008 it seem like Blu-ray was going to be the format and so got ready to upgrade my TV and get my first Blu-ray player. My buddy beat me too it however and in March 2008 I got to see Cars on Blu-ray and while it did not convert me per say (since I was going to move up to HD anyway) it sure convince me to hurry up and get Blu-ray

The best HD format available, Blu-ray, not a single title!

In addition to its superior technical portfolio in comparison to HDDVD, and the unified support by the hardware manufacturers, I also liked the fact that Blu-ray allowed for region-coding, which ensured that small distributors outside of North America would not be eliminated by the U.S. majors -- which in return guarantees the presence of a rich, diverse film market. With other words - contrary to the disinformation that HDDVD was the more consumer friendly format - I liked the fact that Blu-ray could become a mass international format, thus also becoming the consumer friendly format we have at the moment.

I honestly can't remember. I know I was coming home from Afghanistan and I had ordered a bunch for the first time since I had a PS3, I figured why not. I mostly tried to buy whatever I could on Blu but the BX I had to buy from wouldn't have any so I had to buy the DVD instead. There are some movies I wish I would of just waited on since now I have to rebuy.

Swordfish was one of the first movies I bought and it was so crisp and great looking I knew I had to get more. I've been trying to learn about blu-ray more since I noticed some movies just don't have the same quality as others and look kind of crappy. This site is great though, it has helped a lot.

Out of interest, Pro-B, why would lack of region coding have lead to problems or the elimination of those smaller studios?

There were no titles specifically I am a movie fan and I want to watch flicks with the highest PQ & AQ I can afford. I can say though the first time I saw a demo @ BB I was blown away. So I stood on side lines and waited out the fight between HD DVD & Blu, once Blu won and prices went down on movies and players and HD TV's I jumped in...

Thats aboutt he same here as well. I just loved the idea of Perfect audio and Perfect picture. HOWEVER I kinda knew the Blu was gonna win out I just decided to wait untill it was over. I remember going to walmart and picking up some of my first movies and the check out lady being required to ask me if I knew I had a different format and saying was I aware that I needed a Blu-ray player to play the movie. I laughed and said yes. They havn't said that though in a lONNNNGGGG time.

It was Toy Story 3 for me. Yes, I know it isn't out yet but I just had a feeling it was going to get a crappy SD release and a loaded BD release. Plus alot of titles I have in my collection were in need of remastering.
