And that's fine. The ratings dropped for Bored to Death, How to Make it in America and Hung so they cancelled them. Enlightened didn't have great ratings either but it did get nominated for awards. It seems pretty clear that HBO is aiming for award winning (or at least nominated) shows and those three weren't doing it for them.
Girls, even if you don't like it has been doing well and is critically acclaimed. Both Girls and Veep were renewed after two or three episodes.

HBO renews EVERY NEW show within weeks of it's season premier. "Game of Thrones," "Lucky," and "Boardwalk Empire" were all renewed the day after the series premier aired. "Veep" was also renewed on the same day.
And if you want to talk ratings you should see how HORRIBLE "True Blood" was it's first 6 episodes...
"I'd love it," Danson said at a press conference during the festival. "I think it's a great idea because we didn't really get to finish. We thought we were coming back and then we discovered we weren't."
The actor - who played magazine editor George Christopher - added that HBO is in early talks with show creator Jonathan Ames about the continuation.
"I think HBO is talking to him about making an HBO film, a 90-minute film, to wrap it up," he explained. "I would love to. Jason Schwartzman is one of my favourite actors and Zach Galifianakis is the funniest man on the planet.
"It was such an interesting pairing - the three of us are so different, I think it really worked."
Danson went on to say that he "loved" his time on Bored To Death, which was officially cancelled alongside Thomas Jane's Hung in December 2011.
"It was my great joy, that show," he said. "A wonderful character, wonderful writing."
Says Hodgman, who played lead character Jonathan Ames’ literary rival Louis Green:
Nothing would make me happier! If that information is true, then chills have just run up and down my whole body, just hearing that — happy chills. But Ted Danson, hard to say — working very hard these days on ‘CSI,’ maybe he was suffering from some jet lag, you know what I mean? He could be easily confused. You know, my dream was to bring ‘Bored to Death’ back as a radio drama, as a series of radio dramas, because that’s where the money is. But if Ted Danson wants to bring it back as a movie, boy oh boy. I think that the audience is there.
Hodgman went on to describe the mood after word of ‘Bored to death’s cancellation first broke, and of potential ideas for a fourth season that series creator Jonathan Ames (the real one) shared with him:
All I remember is that for the first four episodes, it would only be me, and the guys wouldn’t appear until like the last episode, yeah. It would be a real switcheroo. I think that’s what he said to me. But actually, without revealing too much, there was an element that we would pick up with the guys a little later on. Even when he was thinking there might be a fourth season, that there might be a little time jump. Not a major ‘Battlestar Galactica‘–style time jump, but there be some time lapsed. And that would be even more appropriate now.”
Fans could get another shot at Bored to Death, after all. According to Lombardo, creator Jonathan Ames is in the process of writing the script for a film follow-up to the since-canceled comedy. "The challenge for us with films now is that we're only making three -- sometimes four, depending on the budget -- a year. Given what's going on in the studio business, we have an unbelievable slate in development," Lombardo noted of his network's famously full slate, adding: "But we love Bored to Death and Jonathan and we're excited to see what he's writing."
DETAILS: Any truth to the rumors that a Bored to Death movie is in the works?
JASON SCHWARTZMAN: I can't say too much, but I can say that there might be more stories to be told. [Silence] But who knows, things can happen, or they cannot happen.
DETAILS: Do you still keep in touch with your costars from the show, Zach Galifianakis and Ted Danson?
JASON SCHWARTZMAN: I have worked with a lot of people that were great, but for some reason you don't stay in touch. This is an instance where not only have I stayed in touch, but I've made real friends. I talk to Ted and Zach and [author and show creator] Jonathan Ames all the time. We were constantly running around the city, working 16 to 18 hours a day, including shooting at night. It was grueling. I remember I would come home from these 18-hour days, wake up, and get in the car to go to set, and I would be so excited. I didn't care how long we had to work. Every day we would make each other laugh, and we were all bummed it was canceled. So, if we could continue it in some way . . .
Since the HBO series “Bored to Death” was unceremoniously canceled last year, fans have been lobbying for a film adaptation of the show. Now Ted Danson, one of its stars, says a “90-minute HBO film” version of the series is in the works. “The deal is about to be signed,” he said. “[Creator Jonathan Ames] is writing it as we speak. I’m very excited.”
Danson made the remarks at the 5th annual GQ Gentleman’s Ball, an event recognizing men who support causes that matter to them thrown by GQ magazine at the IAC Building in Manhattan last night. Danson was honored for his work with Oceana, an ocean-advocacy organization.
“Bored to Death” followed the comedic exploits of a Brooklyn-based writer, played by Jason Schwartzman, who moonlights as a private detective. Danson played a womanizing magazine editor on the show.
So what’s the plot of the potential film? “I think Jason becomes a policeman, which means, for him, a traffic cop,” Danson said. “He’ll have a traffic-cop go-kart kind of thing. And I think Ray and I move in together, both of us without relationships. And then: hijinks. All hell breaks loose. That’s about as much as I know.”
Danson said he’s rooting for the film to come together. “Lord, yes, I’m onboard,” he said.
An HBO spokesperson said “We confirmed a while back that we were in talks about the film but we don’t discuss projects in development”
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that HBO is developing a feature-length film that would continue the quirky adventures of the Brooklyn-based writer/amateur private eye played by Jason Schwartzman for three seasons from 2009-11.

Word first broke about the potential project in June; Danson mentioned it at the GQ Gentleman's Ball in October, adding that the script -- at least then -- saw Jonathan become a police officer and Ray and George become roommates. Schwartzman, who is close friends with Ames, recently told THR that Ames was working on the script and that he'd love to make the film. Asked about his character's signature trenchcoat, he joked, "I hope it still fits." The pair also are working on another writing project together.
The long-rumored "Bored to Death" movie is officially in development, The Huffington Post has confirmed.
The feature-length project is being produced by HBO Films, and will be written by the show's creator, Jonathan Ames, with Sarah Condon and Stephanie Davis executive producing.
I kinda loved Bored To Death and i'm happy a movie is being made. It's not the deepest show, but it's a lot of fun and entertaining to watch - Mainly cos of the three co-stars and Jonathan Ames who obviously put a lot of heart into the show!

You said before that if you got a fourth season, you were going to put Isla Fisher's character, Jonathan's half-sister, in a sanitarium, to recover from the accidental incest. What's the plan for the movie?
Maybe it would be one of those Mel Brooks things, a dark shot of the sanitarium. Hopefully she'll be alright and get over it. Not get over it, but survive, you know? But yeah, that whole thing, the idea was to search for the father. The Oedipal quest. I had once heard in a literature class at Princeton that the first detective in literature was Oedipus — which is something that was said in season one — so I thought, Okay, let's set him off on this Oedipal quest. And when Oedipus went on this quest, he inadvertently slept with his mother. Because when you go to solve mysteries, you find out dark things. Finding out the mystery of his father, Jonathan discovers he slept with his sister. So in the movie, Jonathan is very affected by it in the movie — I won't say how or why, but it's a few years later. It's not entirely the plan for the fourth season, because it's like cupcakes to cake with the movie. I have to think of the people who've never seen any of this before, so I don't want to do a lot of tying off of things for the more dedicated fan. There will be some of that. But if someone is seeing it for the first time, can they get it enough?
What's your schedule for making the movie happen?
Just write it and see. I feel like with the TV show, or anything that comes together, I think of it as a Swiss clock of luck. It has the precision of a Swiss clock, but it's all luck: for the TV show to have happened at all, to have met Jason [Schwartzman], for him to decide to do TV, for HBO to have suggested Ted Danson, for me to have written this story at a certain time in my life for someone at HBO to take meetings. So many lucky things had to happen, it's really remarkable. I don't know what kind of budget we'll have, it might still be small, but there are a number of big images I want to go to, that I was going to do anyway to be cinematic, to be silly and/or beautiful. Like in one season, I wanted to recreate the ending of Casablanca and Some Like It Hot, so I had them going on the boat and them walking across the foggy airstrip. I know it's cheesy to combine two movies like that, but I do think it made for a beautiful last scene in that episode. Every episode had a big, fun moment like that I wanted to get to, and then I would work backwards, story wise, to validate that. So in the movie, I'll have several of those. Obviously I want a good story, but so much of the charm of the show was anecdotal, them just talking. So that's the challenge, and I hope I can pull it off for 90 minutes.
Basically what I'm doing right now is gathering all of my notes. I carry around these little notebooks, and I would write down images I wanted, snippets of dialogue, funny notions, character arcs, all very scattered. [Takes out a notebook] This happens to be the one I have now, but I haven't started in this one yet. I type all that up, and then I figure, How do I string all this together? I had to pitch it, so I know the structure of the movie, but I want to be open to change it in case something better comes along. So right now, I'm just writing, gathering all my notes. Everything has to be approved, too.
Have you shared your ideas with the cast yet? Ted Danson seemed to think Jonathan would become a policeman, and that Ray and George would be roommates.
Not really. I'm just sort of starting out. Jason and I might confer more, because we're more frequently in touch.
Well, whenever I run into anyone who was on the show, from Zach Galifianakis to John Hodgman to Kevin Bacon to Dick Cavett, they all say they are down to do whatever you come up with, if you'll have them.

I think I broke the news to Zach, when I told him about the movie at the premiere of The Campaign. He was so excited.
Ted and Zach have the funniest rapport. The three of them are all just really sweet pals, and I was kind of the fourth wheel. They didn't know each other before, and they became really dear friends. So yeah, they're great guys. With the TV show, we were working together so closely, and I would tell them their arc for the season, but this is going to be a long term project, so I'm not going to bother them with something that may or may not happen.
