(1) Star Wars: A New Hope - the scene
[Show spoiler]where Luke is watching the double-star sunset after learning that he has to once again postpone leaving his life on the farm.
That scene precisely summed up the feeling of loneliness and powerless nature of youth that yearns for a happy future, but is constrained by a hopeless current situation.

(2) Jaws - the scene where
[Show spoiler]Chief Brody is sadly setting at his table after being confronted by the woman whose son was killed by a shark.
It reminded me that one will eventually emerge from moments of deepest despair, as Brody did when his son, and eventually Richard Dreyfuss, cheered him up.

(3) LotR - The Return of the King - the scene where
[Show spoiler]Frodo and Sam are rescued by the eagles while awaiting their apparent death on Mount Doom.
The combination of situation, scenery, and music create the most dream-like sequence that I can remember seeing in a film.

(4) Close Encounters of the Third Kind -
[Show spoiler]Richard Dreyfuss is depondently building Devil's Tower in the den of his house after his wife leaves with his children
. Another well depicted moment of utter despair and loneliness, the moment after one has lost everything that they valued in life while experiencing the mental anguish of pursuing a seemingly unattainable (and unknowable) goal.

(5) 2001 -
[Show spoiler] the very last seen with the Star Child slowly turning its eyes to face the audience.
The most dramatic statement I have ever seen that perfectly sums up the basic reality of life: you don't know your purpose or why you are here, but you have just enough intelligence to know that life (although strangely wonderful) is an unsolvable mystery - and you will never understand the meaning of existence.

(1) 2001 -- what Bearcat said

(2) Wings of Desire: when the Angel
[Show spoiler]whispers into the distressed man's ear (guy who had motorcycle accident). The man's depressed voice slowly merges with the Angel's hope-filled voice until they're both speaking in a unison monologue of hope rather than fear -- and I'm reminded how our thoughts may be guided by forces beyond our perception (if we're receptive)

(3) There Will Be Blood: ascending double-beat score as the camera pans out from the
[Show spoiler]burning oil rig
in the pitch black of night -- as the flame from the
[Show spoiler]burning oil rig
gets smaller and smaller and surrounded by darkness, the score gets louder and louder. A perfect reverse relationship of perfection!

(4) Apocalypse Now -- what Bearcat said

(5) Mulholland Drive - opening sequence with camera slightly raised behind the limousine as it slowly slithers up the winding inclines of Mulholland Drive at night - with plush vegetation along the road wayside, Los Angeles flashing like a fire down below, and an eerie synthesizer score in the background that chills my spine as I watch each limo turn and enter Lynch-induced hynposis

Star Wars
[Show spoiler]The opening theme and crawl were cool. I was impressed when Tatooine had an actual atmosphere and I was really impressed when the rebel ship entered the frame. But when the Star Detroyer slowly filled the entire frame? I was stunned. I turned fifteen that summer. I'd seen a lot of movies before and I've seen a lot more since but nothing has ever topped the absolutely magical 'whoa, we're not in Kansas anymore' feeling of that moment.

Rocky
[Show spoiler]When he goes down in the 14th round and everybody tells him to stay down. It's corny, it's melodramatic, it's cheap emotional manipulation and it gets me every single time.

Rosemary's Baby
[Show spoiler]The appointment to meet Hutch outside the Time-Life building. It starts out breezy with a positive crowd energy but gradually turns ominous when Hutch doesn't arrive. She finds out that Hutch had suddenly fallen into a coma and the crowds then become oppressive and then even isolating. That's probably my favorite part of the scene - the way he makes her seem so utterly alone and cut off in the middle of a huge crowd. (As an aside, you can see hints of this in Repulsion too. It's not quite as refined but it's definitely there).

Goodfellas
[Show spoiler]"Hey Tommy, if I was gonna break your balls I'd tell you to go home and get your shinebox" From the establishing shot of the bar exterior to 'I didn't want to get blood on your floor' this whole sequence is just about perfect. Dialogue, performances, music, camerawork, lighting, pacing...everything hit exactly the right notes.

M
[Show spoiler]Peter Lorre's capture. It's a great scene on a lot of levels but the thing I love most about it is how by the end of the chase you get bedazzled into identifying with the prey (momentarily forgetting he's a serial child killer and that his capture, even at the hands of criminals probably isn't all that terrible a thing). It's quite the piece of cinematic sleight-of-hand.

ironically enough i was deciding between what you chose for There Will Be Blood and what i put would've been super eerie if i would have had 3 of the same! but i do love that scene. i think the music is really "love it" or "hate it" but i loved it

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
[Show spoiler]The ending: at the monastery, Zhang Ziyi asks her lover, the bandit, to make a wish, and she leaps off the bridge. I walked out of the theatre almost in tears, completely stunned by the sheer beauty of it all.

Might be the best bit of scoring I've ever seen/heard in a movie. I thought about putting that on my list. Ecstasy of Gold is an incredible track.

1) Goodfellas
[Show spoiler]The scene with Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta where Pesci does the Do I amuse you? what am I a clown scene.

2) True Romance
[Show spoiler]The scene with Christopher Walken interrogating Dennis Hopper.

3) True Romance
[Show spoiler]The scene where Christian Slater meets Gary Oldman and then kills him. Gary Oldmans character makes that scene a classic!

4) Jaws
[Show spoiler]Tough choice between the scene where Quint gets eaten (I still can't believe that this was PG rated) or the ending where Brody shoots the air tank to kill the shark.

5) Night of the Living Dead
[Show spoiler]The ending where they shoot the black guy after thinking he was a zombie. That guy was the hero of the movie and I never expected that he would die, especially that way.

So many choices, and so many great scenes already listed. Nearly impossible to even consider making a list. The ones that stand out at the moment would be the transition scene in Molholland Drive (during the performance of "Crying"). Its eerie, beautiful, sad, and confusing as hell all at the same time.

I know its already been mentioned, but the Alec Baldwin motivational speech in Glengarry Glenross is also a favorite.
