It's only growing because the major LCD/LED/Plasma manufactures are putting the 3D feature in their newer displays. So yeah more 3D displays are being sold, but most are not being used for 3D. As long as glasses are involved the present home 3D model will never be more than a niche product. It also doesn't help that colors for 3D are still slightly saturated when compared to 2D. Furthermore, there's only about 30 titles to choose from that were either actually made in 3D rather than that God-awful 2D to 3D conversion junk. Another major problem is that three-quarters of the available 3D titles are animated.

+ 1. Just upgraded to HDTV Plasma 2D. Zero interest in 3D in the cinema or in the home. Too many headaches whilst watching 3D in the cinema which haven't been medically investigated and with little or no interest in this issue being followed up by the movie studios, the cinema distribution and owners, makes you wonder. Why? Same thing with 3D HDTV. No interest in possible health issues makes me stear clear. Wearing glasses on top of glasses is not fun either. Interesting to note with all the holiday shopping, this evening at Best Buy there were no potential interested buyers checking out the 3D HDTV sets - no one at all. About 3 or 4 months ago it was quite the reverse situation. Tonight people were flocking towards the 2D HDTV sets. Just an observation. I have no interest in 3D for or against - it's simply not for me. Good luck to those who find it compelling. So long as there is still a choice I will opt for 2D Blu-Ray all the time.

I see your point. I just think that it is still in its infant stages at this point so that's the reason for the limited number of movies. Personally, I love animated movies so that part doesn't bother me at all. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that 3d is is in any way superior to 2d. I own a 3d TV and we still spend 90% of our movie watching time with 2d. I just think that it is a very neat feature to have when you are in the mood for a 3d movie, and I just don't see it being completely phased out any time soon.

Now the one thing that does bother me to no end is all of the studio exclusive deals. If anything does end up hurting the future growth of 3d, I believe it will be this.

I'll probably be leaving home within the next 2-3 years and in that time 3D TVs will have dropped down in price a lot, so once I've left home I plan on my first television being a 3D TV. As such at the moment, so long as a 2D version is included, all new movies that come out in 3D in theatres I am buying in 3D upon their Blu-ray release.

I'm not a serious 3D enthusiast by any means, but I do believe within the next 4-5 years 3D TVs will be big buisness and inevitably 3D TVs will be the dominant kind of TV on the market.
So I don't think it is a fad at all, because if it is then 3D would be fading out now and audiences wouldn't be wanting to see it, but the reason it isn't fading out is because the general public don't see movies as often as members on this forum do, so to them 3D is something magical. And for moviegoers, 3D is split right down the middle with 50% loving it and 50% hating it, as such the majority of audiences actually want to see movies in 3D.
But whilst it maybe a novelty at the moment, that novelty will become the norm as technology progresses and people will become used to everything being in 3D. The same happened with colour: it was a novelty and then it was the norm. At least that's my view and you can disagree with me as much as you want, but that's why I'm future proofing moy Blu-rays.

No, I actually refuse to buy anything 3D related and will skip any release that includes a 3D disc. I will not accept how manufacturers force exclusives and proprietary systems down consumers throats.

Yes I have started to buy 3Ds. I think it is all to get prepared for the change. The same thing happened when people used to buy DVDs , so they now put the DVD with the BDs discs. It's all about time.

I personally do not own a 3D bluray player or a 3D TV, but planning to in some time. Waiting for Oppo 93 release and when the prices become more attractive so why not?

I did, I know have a 3d set-up and am glad I did.

+1

Waiting for the Oppo 93 and for JVC's new 3D projectors to be released and thoroughly tested. Looking at the X-7, but might wait for gen 2 if they have any issues.
Looking forward to real 3D at home..

No and I have no plan to go 3D. I know very well I will probably have a 3D TV when I am ready for my next purchases in 3 or 4 years but I won't be using the 3D features.

I own a Sony Blu Ray/3-D player and a 3-D Amp. Just need all the rest

I have Disney's Christmas Carol in the event my TV blows-up and I'll get a Plasma rig...just not enough content...yet.

I know that some Bowl games will be broadcast in 3-d but still not ready to shell out the $ .

Yea, I've been picking up 3D copies here and there. I plan on getting a 3D system after the holidays, probablly a Panasonic. So if I see a title that is on sale, I'll get it. And they will sit silently until the day I go full 3D. That will be a fun day.

it's funny how most people complain that they'll never get a 3d set up
yes, right now very few people are purchasing equipment and its a complete
niche market, but wasn't it exactly the same with bluray!?
didn't everybody originally say, no i don't need an upgrade in picture,
dvd quality is good enough for me??

i don't own a 3d tv yet and don't plan to get one soon either, but i already
started future proving on some titles, as i don't plan on repurchasing
titles again and again, like upgrading my dvd collection to blu

there is literally a ton of 3d movies being released in 2011 and even though
there are hardly any sales now, eveything seems to be going in that
direction. new technology always slowly takes over and maybe a few years
down the road movies will not even be released in 2d anymore, just like
studios are starting to not even release some titles on dvd anymore.

just keep an open mind people. i'm sure some of the biggest haters will
start getting into it in a few years, just like the transition to blu
have a bit of imagination to think a little bit ahead of the situation,
because i am talking a bet here that with the industry pushing everything
towards 3d, it will hardly fail as a concept.
does this mean the industry sort of dictates what the market wants?
yes, but it wouldn't be the first time

I have said this before and I will say it again, I am sick of being call a HATER...

I have no problem with 3D, people can buy left and right and have fun with it. I just have no need for it. I know very well that all TV in the next 3 or 4 years will be in 3D. That being said, I will not use it. I have no need for it and no interest in 3D. That does not make me a hater, I just don't have any need for it.

On the same token, what is it with all the 3D fans wanting everyone to love it as well?

I don't hate 3D either. I like 3D, I just rather it be something "special" that I enjoy once in a while at the theater. If everything is available in home, what's the fun? The way things are going, no one will ever leave their homes.

I just personally don't plan to upgrade any time soon. I also don't necessarily want to pay the extra $$ for "future proofing" with 3D/Blu/DVD combo sets. However, that's not to say that I wouldn't purchase a title here or there given the price was right (for instance I pre-ordered Tangled w/coupon and it's not a bad deal at the moment) or it's something that I do want to make sure I have for the future (but there are only a very small amount of movies I'd like in 3D, others just aren't meant for 3D), if I ever decided to upgrade.

I guess my point is I'm in no rush to jump on the 3D bandwagon anytime soon as I'm perfectly content with my current state of entertainment.

Yes I buy 3D movies, and if a movie was played in 3D and there is no 3D equivalent to buy, I just won't buy it. I will buy a 3D set soon, so why waste money on a 2D version when I know that as soon as I have a 3D set-up I will want to watch it in 3D the way it was intended to be seen instead of 2d.

PS except for the Viacom titles now I have not seen a big (and some times any) price difference between 3D or just 2D.

No, there are two reasons
1) there are a lot of haters that just search for every 3D thread to say how evil it is

2) It is human nature to be short sited, not to pick on the guy but

and there are others like it. I made the same point in an other thread most people think in the now, something that is even possibly 6 months away is a no because it is too distant in the future. I made the same point in the Inception thread where someone said it was 65% because people that have no intention in buying BD bought the combo pack to future proof.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. 3D is there to stay. I don't have a 3D setup right now, but as soon as they get 3DTV without glasses, I will be getting one. Glasses is the main thing that gets people out of the 3D for now. In about 2 years, half of the people who said they did not want a 3D setup wont be able to live without. It's always like that when a new technology comes out.

The issues I have with 3D are related to the look of it, not the glasses.

I won't buy just any movie (even if it has a 3D disc) either. The only movies I buy are the ones my family and/or I really want (and only one copy of said movie, it's not about making money off 'em). When it comes to choosing between the 3D combo pack or regular, it depends on how much each one is going for and whether or not I think it is worth it to spend a little extra to get the 3D disc to sell on eBay. Since I'm constantly buying Disney movies for my kids, I try to get the best deals (stacking coupons with TRU pre-order deals is often what we do) hoping to spend $8 or less on a Disney movie after all is said and done. So far it's worked out pretty well, but I did have to return my pre-order for TS3 when TRU didn't put it on sale, $35 was ridiculous.
