Exactly. Which is why not only should we not fear the new format... we should encourage it. Given that HD DVD has always preached that studio and CE support doesn't matter -- it's just player price (not disc price mind you). Let's get another format with no chance of winning to beat them on price... and then we can just sit back and laugh.

If great foreign titles are released on this format, I am probably going to go ahead and pick it up. I can't imagine major Hollywood films are released, but who knows now what software support it will have. Whatever it does, it can't do much worse than HD DVD has done and HD DVD is still hanging around.

Oh yes, it can do much worse than HD DVD. But- good luck finding one to buy.
Anyway- I don't believe the speed rating. Considering it's a red laser, which drastically limits the recording density, and the fact it's using basically the same discs as everyone else- I just don't see those transfer speeds, not sustained. The discs cannot spin ever faster. IIRC, there was an early CD burner that was taken off the market, or maybe never made it to market, because it spun the disc so fast as to create a hazard. These things have been spun to destruction, and you don't want a high speed piece of disc ripping out your plastic door. It will "make your day." You'd be telling that story for a long time. I haven't done the math, but with the disc spinning no faster, or only slightly faster, than today's discs, and the lower density caused by the use of red wavelengths, I don't see it picking up and moving data at 40 Mbps. If they could, then HD DVD would be doing it. |
