they are all completely unrelated except for the theme of revenge. you dont need to see them in order or anything. i do recommend checking them all out however. Lady Vengeance is really good, i like it almost as much as Oldboy. Sympathy for Mr Vengeance is really good as well, its just not a movie i can watch often. its extremely dark, depressing, and intense.

Personally, I'd say you're missing out big if you don't see the rest of Chan-wook's work. That includes Thirst, I'm a Cyborg, and JSA in addition to the other two vengeance films. I actually see Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Lady Vengeance as more substantive and thought provoking than Oldboy.

As for the remake, if Spike Lee does helm it, I actually hope he goes with a racially charged story. I love the original, and therefor see no reason he should stick close to what's already been done with perfection. Lee is obviously passionate about the subject of race so I'd hate for him to censor himself just to keep from offending some people.

Oldboy: The Quest for a Villain
Clive Owen the latest to reportedly pass on the bad guy role.
We can now add another name to the list of actors who have reportedly passed on playing the villain in director Spike Lee's remake of Oldboy.

After Christian Bale and Colin Firth both passed on the part, Twitch Film now reports that the latest contender, Clive Owen, has also turned it down. Owen and Lee had previously worked together on Inside Man.

The site says the production has a bit more time to find another actor as principal photography has been pushed back until late summer or early fall so Oldboy star Josh Brolin can fulfill his press commitments this summer for Men in Black III.

Oh is it because you actually like the attention by showing how superior you are to the likes of us? Get over yourself and end this bullshit tirade already.

Back on topic, it seems like everybody is in agreement that nobody wants this film remade, plain and simple.
Man you have some of the most confusing and random posts that make no sense. I didn't turn anything into a rant. I suggest you go back and look at post #39 and #40 for the turn in tone of this thread. This discussion was going fine until you and your friends decided to turn this into 'whose turn is it to call Spike Lee a racist'. Don't you dare try to turn this on me. And I mentioned the other forum because contrary to your beliefs there are other message boards out there besides this. That isn't the point that I should stay over I was just mentioning how ON TOPIC and completely opposite the tone is about the same subject, Lee and Oldboy. You want to talk about Lee and Oldboy, fine. You want to talk about Lee and his movies fine. You want to talk about Lee and his views on society and whether you think he is a racist. Take that nonsense somewhere else or create another topic on just that. As for you, you don't know what you are talking about and you never really have on this board. You act like because you post some links to articles that you own this board and you can say and do whatever you want. All you are is some pile on and jump on the bandwagon poster. Always will be in my mind.

Well it's not like any of those movies are the feel good happy movie of the year, lol. They are all dark, depressing and intense, but yes I would say Vengeance probably more so.

I just watched Old Boy the other day. The origional is a REALLY good movie. I'm not one of those who thinks that remakes are evil, however, and would be interested to see someone elses take on the story. That being said, I'm not really a Spike Lee fan, so most likely wouldn't check out a remake directed by Mr. Lee. My .02

Well it's now official....

Spike Lee To Direct 'Oldboy' For Mandate Pictures
Quote:
Los Angeles (July 11, 2011) – Mandate Pictures announced today that Spike Lee (Inside Man) will direct OLDBOY, a remake of the highly-acclaimed South Korean film. Mark Protosevich has adapted the screenplay and will co-produce. Roy Lee and Doug Davison (The Departed, The Grudge) will produce. The film is a Vertigo Entertainment/40 Acres & A Mule Production. Mandate President Nathan Kahane will executive produce.

“It’s a great honor to put this special project into the hands of such a gifted writer and iconic director,” said Kahane.

OLDBOY tells the story of a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday. For fifteen years, he is held captive, and, upon his release, must begin his journey to find the reason for his imprisonment. He soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than his solitary confinement. The original film, released in 2003, directed by Chan-wook Park won the Grand Prize Jury Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

Spike Lee and Mark Protosevich are represented by CAA. Dan Freedman, SVP of business affairs, negotiated the deals for Mandate.

The titles for me which are untouchable are The Godfather, Back to the Future, The Crow and Stand By Me. But I do agree that this shouldn't be remade.

Well, let's see where it goes. Worst case scenario, Park will end up looking like a genius, which he may be.

Wonder if he will go with a talented lead and someone he's worked with before like Denzel, or if Will Smith will jump back on board.

Default Oldboy - Spike Lee?

Any Thoughts on this?
What do you think about the cast?
Do you think it will be better or worse than the 2003 Korean Original?

Do you think they will make a Hollywood star eat a live octopus like in the original? After Will Smith was originally casted i thought it would be hilarious to watch.

I don't want to take a guess, on the quality of the final product. As i'm normally wrong. But as a big fan of the original, I am happy with the casting. Josh Brolin is especially a win, i believe.

I wish the film all the success, despite thinking it's unnecessary. The usual argument, as a pro, when it comes to remakes, is that it'll not take away from the original or make it disappear. But i'd hate for this film to turn out mediocre, and have it waste the twist on people, so to speak. They'd still be able to watch the original and enjoy it, but i think it would take away from the experience, of course. I think like watching a film like Se7en for the first time, no matter how enjoyable it is on multiple watches, there's nothing like your first time through it.

I was also quite surprised to discover recently, that filming has already wrapped and it's out October. Sort of crept up on me.

I think the key here is Not trying to one up the original. it can't be done, the original is too exuberant and involving. If Spike Lee starts from the ground up and tackles the material with a new angle, he'll be okay. I wouldnt mind if it's drastically different.

I agree. It seems similar to the way people were comparing the swedish and american versions of Girl With a Dragon Tattoo.I was very leary of the american version upon announcement and it turned out to be really well done in very different ways then the swedish version.I think the same is true here.Depending on the presentation and writing this could be another great surprise or a serious turd.Im open minded anyway.

What makes the original so good is it's a part of a Revenge trilogy by Chan Woo-Park. All the movies are FANTASTIC...
  • Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
  • Oldboy
  • Lady Vengeance

I am a Spike Lee fan but I dunno about this remake. Oldboy is uniquely so, so good. Hell the entire trilogy is GREAT!!

Spike Lee may or may not be a racist, or a white-hater, or a race-baiter, and that doesn't concern me.

What does concern me is that he can't make a good film and that now people are going to know of Oldboy as being a terrible movie. Hopefully at least some of them read about it on Wikipedia after watching it, realize there was an older version, and watch that, I guess.
