Again... just because you and perhaps your industry is ok with people taking your ideas and making money from them... doesn't make it the norm. Most people would feel ripped off if others stole from them OR sold something they created without permission. How you can draw a line to greed from that... I mean, if you're drawing the line there, why not ask for the movies on DVD for free? I mean, wouldn't it be pure "greed" to make you pay for a Blu-ray of something you already paid to watch on cable or satellite? Heck... why are they even being greedy and making you pay to watch it there. Why are TV manufacturers greedy and not giving away their TVs? Why do you have to buy a TV in order to watch a show they want you to watch. They should give you a TV and electricity and a home and time to watch the stuff they create. Hyperbole mode off ![]() |

So your telling me if the creators/owners of those songs weren't asking for insane amounts of money to use their songs in the BD releases they still wouldn't be put out? I call BS. If they would ask for fair pricing the studios would have probably put them out by now. Who knows maybe they are and the studios are cheap and don't want to pay them again. My train of thought on this is why should they pay them again when they already did for when the show was on tv for years. Shouldn't those songs be part of the show? Shouldn't they have the right to put it on DVD/BD without having to worry about the record labels or the song creators wanting more money for something they got paid for. This is the same issue that is going on right now with videos games and it's (IMO) only because of greed. Explained better than I can, it starts at 2:44 If I design a ring and sell it to you then you go and sell it you someone else after having it for years do you have to pay me? That's how I feel with the music on these shows. They already got paid the first time around for having their songs used in the show for years. The songs are a part of the show. Why should they get paid again when the studio wants to release them on DVD/BD. |

Old shows are another discussion... since syndication was a new thing, then home video was a new thing... prior to those new things, there was no reason to secure rights beyond TV airing. But now... and I'd argue for the last 30 years... there is no excuse for not locking up the home video rights to that music before putting it in the show. They know they might want to release home video one day, and they could negotiate for the music rights up front... but they still don't. They wait... for no apparent reason... and then sometimes it becomes a problem. I can't blame a musician for wanting to get paid for the song he created. I can blame the producer of the TV show for not signing up for home video rights before using the song in the show. Before the song ever gets used in the show... that decision should be made. Don't use a song in a TV show that you haven't secured the rights to use in home video. It seems the movie studios finally got this right. Some old movies are a problem, but I'm not aware of any new release movie in recent years that had to have music substitution or was held up for negotiations... The movie producers are sewing up the home video rights before putting the song in the movie, period. Done deal. IF the TV studios would do this, then we wouldn't have any problems except for the really old stuff. My guess on Drew Carey is that the network (ABC I believe) never thought it would last... so they didn't bother... then the show ran something like 9 seasons I think... and then they found themselves with a problem... a show that had music that they didn't secure home video rights to release. That's on the studio, and not the musician. Even IF the musician wants too much money... it still is the fault of the TV studio because IF they didn't secure all the distribution rights, they never should have put the music in the show. |

![]() I bought the season one DVD of Drew Carey... and hoped for the rest. ABC did something screwy with that final season so I missed a lot of episodes as it bounced around or showed two shows a night when I wasn't expecting it. It has been a while since I've seen the show in syndication too... it seems to have fallen off the planet! |

I used to really love The Drew Carey Show. It's never on any channel which is a shame. I'm surprised TBS doesn't grab it for syndication since they show so many comedies. I would gladly watch it again.

An alternative good fit would be ABC Family since they used to run the "Whose Line" shows featuring Drew & company. I would really like to see the later seasons of Drew that were in HD... because I didn't get an HDTV until after the show had ended, but I know some of them aired in HD on ABC towards the end. |

It’s both, I'm sure the writers feel like they deserve Bieber and Perry money, because they wrote a catchy song for an opening, and the studios didn't look far enough down the road to make sure all the bases were covered. In the end everyone loses money although I think TV season margins are already low.

When you say "in the end everyone loses money"... The musician isn't losing money unless they allowed the studio to release without paying them. That's the point... the musician who owns the song he/she wrote trying to get paid for the additional use. That's why I put all the blame up front on the studio producing the show. There's simply no reason in today's market to produce and air a TV show that you haven't secured rights for other distribution like home video for any included music. IF you don't secure those rights, don't use the song in the show in the first place... then you don't have any musician to re-negotiate with later. Easy peasy. Quote:
I don't know what kind of money/time would be involved to "restore" Drew Carey. It might be mostly good already depending on how they did the later seasons that aired in HD... maybe only some of the early seasons would need restoration. |

$500 million form Netflix for streaming rights, I bet there is something in there about a Blu-ray release. Although having said that I bet the sales would be so low it wouldn't dent Netflix's investment. Would love this on Blu though along with How I Met Your Mother and Malcolm in the Middle.

I think that's just it - it's just not worth it to the rights owners. You can bet among the reasons they got so much for it was because they can say that it's not currently otherwise available on home media. Even a hugely successful Blu-ray title these days still is only selling in the 10's of 1000's, it just isn't worth getting out of bed for them, so to speak.
