The only way to successfully write him out would be to have him die, but that is a route I would also hate. There's no real reason to write the character out. Now with a new war, Michael, and Eve, there is enough story for the 5th movie to have the depth of the first one. You take Michael out of the equation and you lose that.

No offense taken. But contrivances to explain away missing characters are typical - and like you say, I'd rather he just ran off than have him die. And I think the "amnesia" contrivance has been done too much.

I'm fine with him being recast.

'Underworld: Next Generation' In Development (Exclusive)

With the introduction of Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and Michael Corvin’s (Scott Speedman) hybrid daughter, Eve (pictured above; India Eisley), in the 2012 Underworld: Awakening, Screen Gems passed the torch to another star in hopes of continuing the franchise.

After a decade-long battle between vampires and werewolves, like it or not, the Underworld franchise is legit. After four successful films, I’m told by my studio Intel that Screen Gems is actively developing the fifth, currently titled Underworld: Next Generation.

While the title could change by the time they go into production, right now they’re seeking a writer and director for the fifth film, although Len Wiseman remains producer. It’s also unclear what direction they will be going as Beckeisale is not attached yet, officially. Hence the title, Next Generation, it’s implied that the new film will follow Eve as the film’s protagonist.

Again, since a director and writer have yet to be assigned, things could change. But in the early stages of development, this is where the studio hopes to take the franchise come 2015.

I love the franchise but no. No more. Awakening could've been a nice capper to the Michael and Selene story but it just felt incomplete, to me.

We'll see. If Beckinsale changes her mind and decides to come back, I'll open to the film.

Kate is Underworld. I would be very sceptical about an Underworld without her.

I'll be disappointed if Kate does not return. One of the aspects I enjoy from this franchise is the recurrence of characters, be it Selene, Viktor, Lucian, Kraven, etc. For me, Rise of the Lycans still worked well without Kate because I really like the characters of Viktor and Lucian (or even Raze).

I loved the first one and liked the second,but the third and fourth seem so generic,they feel like straight to VOD type of movies.I do not see anything progressing with a fifth installment. Kate needs to concentrate on something fresh and let Underworld go.

The 3rd was more of an extended backstory scene than a standalone underworld film for me anyway

I have to agree that without Kate Beckingsale, the Underworld films going forward won't be an inviting. The Underworld films were notoriously bad in the first place. But, it was Kate Beckingsale's appearance in the film series that really sold it to fans, much in the same way that Milla Jovovich is to Resident Evil.

It wasn't meant to cap off the series. It was meant basically as a new direction, but still a continuation of the Selene and Michael storyline. They wouldn't have ended Awakening the way they did if anything but having them front and center along with Eve made any sense.

Still, everyone is jumping to conclusions based solely on a working title. Yes, it does imply what people are afraid of, but nothing is final by any means. Kate was even open to doing another after Awakening, and it makes no sense to do anything but continue the storyline they left with at the end of that.

I like the Eve character, and I can see them attempting to build it around her at some point, but not with Underworld 5.

Agreed. Kate's great and all, but these movies have a great supporting cast. Can't go wrong with Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen. Plus... medieval vampires/werewolves.

I liked Awakening, I would be open for a new movie if they go forward with it. Even if she is not the main protagonist anymore I would still like to see Kate Beckingsale be apart of it somehow. I suppose we will have to see what happens.

I agree with those who say that without Kate it's VERY difficult to excited about a new Underworld film.

And I also agree with those who think that the 3rd one is the worst. It's the only one that I haven't watched a second time. I just skipped right from #2 to #4 when I got the box set.
