I know it is director's intent, but it can be ridiculous at times.
I would think that if the BD looks grainier that the theater it must be because the BD is SHARPER than the theater's image projected onscreen. When you see a print in a theater, due to several facrors the contrast function (the amplitude (sharpness) at the high frequencies) gets degraded. When I actually compared the 300 BD to a 3K (a 1400 x 3000 pixel file) grab I found the BD was just a smidge softer and less grainy that the digital 3k file viewed directly

What you see in this movie isnt that.

First of all that camera has a 4:3 sensor. So its widescreen mode loses some res.
I am pretty sure the Canon XL the movie was shot with has a widescreen lens you can attach.

You think Danny Boyle had a budget restraint that limited him to a Canon DV worth 3 grand?!? Are you serious? This movie had an 8 million dollar budget man..the camera was chosen on purpose. This is successful film director .. not some nobody.

Just because a movie is on blu ray doesn't mean it is going to look amazing. Especially for a film like this that was shot on video and that resolution is lower than 1920x1080. Film is another story because the max res is greater than 1920x1080. So this film was basically just upconverted for the blu ray release, plain and simple

Slightly off topic:

ANyone know where I can get this in Canada? Ive looked through Futureshop and Bestbuy's website and can only find 28 weeks later.

As much as I love bluray, and I had every intention of getting these both on BD, im tempted to just get the DVD of days and the BD of weeks, from the PQ comments and due to the fact I cant bloody find the BD anyways.

Unfortunately the 27.99 double DVD pack is looking tempting now

hey! a fellow calgarian!
i've noticed that too, 28 days seems to not exist here.
go with amazon.com and buy in multiples to minimize shipping, its cheaper 99% of the time. only downside is it takes a couple weeks. i only shop FS or BB when they have a sale.

I am a huge fan of film, so I am often critical of movies unnecessarily shot on digital video. But budget restrictions aside, I don’t see how this movie would have worked as well any other way. And what we see with this Blu-ray is a great example of how perfect digital video can look. The disc is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen and encoded at 1080p. The entire film has a very washed out and gloomy palette, its a zombie movie for God’s sakes. But what we do get is incredible, with black levels being especially detailed. Overall detail is also impressive. Of course there is a veneer of grain, but its absolutely essential to the mood and character of the film.

28 Days on blu has the DTS HD 5.1 lossless for a good audio upgrade. Why buy one on dvd and the other on blu? Support the format!!

I'm also Canadian and I have both on order from Amazon.com
Prices there are quite reasonable.

So do those with the 28DL Blu-Ray recommend that over the regular release? Is it worth it? I never bought the DVD, and I don't mind spending the extra money for the Blu, but if it's not worth it, I'll hold off.

I just watched Weeks and it definitely benefits from being on Blu-ray. Especially the bombing scene, it looks AMAZING.

IMO the bluray of 28 Days is the best version of this movie available right now, and I also found a review that says the same thing.

I also never owned the dvd, but now that its out on bluray, I'm picking it up on the newest format. I rarely buy dvds anymore.

This disc unquestionably has the worst looking PQ of any BD I have seen.

And no hi def format is going to fix that. It looks the way it looks cuz that's how it was made. But like JTSTARKILLER said, if he has no problem spending the extra for the bluray why buy the dvd? The dvd will look bad too, but the bluray has the lossless sound, which is a good enough upgrade to spend the extra few bucks IMO.

I don't disagree with that. However, I am concerned about buyers who don't know ahead of time what they will be getting with this disc. Not all BD buyers read these forums carefully enough to know about this.

That's a good point. But I don't see 28 Days Later as a title that would be a blind buy because of the genre, story, actors, etc. More mainstream titles like FF2 will be purchased anyway. 28 Days is not a AAA title to begin with(although for me it was). Weeks is the new release. I think most people would do some research before buying either of these anyway.

You may be right about that. I imagine any review would mention this.
