I read this thread earlier in the week and agreed I needed to cut back and watch the "unwatched" in my collection too.

But just in the past week: I won a bid on a Twilight Zone Season 3 BD for a great price, I pre-ordered "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (it's only $12.99!) and I even ordered the massive Laurel and Hardy box set because now it's half off what it was 6 months ago.

So my cold turkey lasted about 19 minutes. I see a deal, I have to buy.

Someone please help me!

Movies I own but haven't watched yet. Star Wars Epsiodes 2, 4, 5, and 6 (waiting on my wife to find time, shes only seen Episode I and she liked Jar-Jar HA!). Scream 3, Goodfellas, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, The Pacific (only watched one episode), Kingdom of Heaven, The Wizard of Oz, and Blood Diamond.

Thats about it so not too bad. I usually buy about 1 or 2 Blu-Rays a week but I'm always on the hunt for good prices. I picked up The Neverending Story yesterday for $10.99, which isn't too bad. I refuse to go over $20 for Blu-Rays old OR new. The only time Ill spend $20 for a Blu is if its new and a movie I'm dying to see for the first time or one I really enjoyed in theaters.

Gotta say though...and I truly regret this. I bought Thor 3D from Best Buy last week for $34.99. I mean its nice to have the 2D AND 3D version of the film but I'm still in remorse for spending that much...even for a 3D movie...AND the 3D sucked anyways

With all my movies in shelves looking me in the face, i'm thinking boy why did i spend all this money for?

Sometimes you get the rush of buying movies, but then you get buyers remorse.

I'm trying to save up and move out, so i'm putting a lock down on what i buy and trying to sell off alot of stuff that i bought i will never watch, or it was just too cheap, but something i would never watch ever. Drama's mostly.

But let's not forget seller's remorse, either. I've been down that road, when I needed some quick cash and sold a bunch of movies (dvds, not blu-rays)--and wouldn't you know, I regretted selling most of them and ended up buying almost all of 'em all over again.

The biggest key is self control. It's never a good idea to buy a bunch of movies and then not watch them, just like it's not a great idea to sell a bunch of movies without watching them.

Even if we accept the premise that it takes three hours to watch an average movie I'm not sure your numbers really make your point anyway.

You're basically saying if you watch five movies a week and you only buy what you have time to watch it will take two years to accumulate 500 blu-rays.

Well, how long have people been buying blu-rays? It's not exactly a new medium anymore.

Nor is it an overly expensive one. Or at least it doesn't have to be. Buying four or five movies a week might sound excessive but given all the various clearance/closeout/lightning/blahblahblah outlets a price sensitive shopper can rack up a lot of BDs for the cost of one ballgame or one dinner out.

But the stuff i'm selling or have sold is stuff i probably will never watch. Something like a Gangs of New York or the Kings Speech. I try to expand my tastes, but at the end of the day i'm a kind of person who likes certain things. whether they be stuff that alot om here thinks are stupid, but have the most play back ability to me.

My main problem is my impulsiveness that I have on bought stuff cheap, even if its something I wouldn't really look or pay full price for. I just ask myself if i see myself re-watching said movie anytime soon. I'm the type of person to watch the same so many movies over and over again. While having atleast 50 others i've never seen, none the less even open yet.

Lock down is hard. I've managed to not buy anything in two months so it's a good start.

I tried making a resolution to myself also to cut back some of my buying but this week has proved to be a challenge with all the great blu deals. I have also lowered my price point for buying blus so this seems to help if I can be strict with myself. Oh and BTW, I failed miserably this week due to the AWESOME deals this whole week. It's just so hard to pass up good deals!

Opposite here.
I have 30 titles being delivered over the next few days (BDs and DVDs).
Still have 85 in my Amazon cart, some of which are multi-title box sets. Also some TV series.
I have over 500 movies on DVD, BD, and HD-DVD, and 7 TV series (either complete or started).
Of the movies, there's only a handful I haven't watched yet as I usually watch them when I receive them. It's the TV shows that we still have a lot of episodes to watch.
We're retired, so time isn't a factor.
If I have nothing new, the drawback to having a large collection is trying to decide what to watch.

How can you be on 20 titles and consider yourself needing a lockdown? haha.

Most people spend more on lunch in a city than it takes to buy a single blu.

Starve a day, grab some entertainment! No one ever died from one meal not eaten.

The easiest way to do it is not to frequent the forum and decline to receive emails from places such as Deep Discount and Amazon etc. Even if you consider yourself a savy shopper, when the sales are pushed in your face its hard to resist.

Meh, I see a good deal I buy it and put it on the shelf for later. I have no problem having unwatched movies. In fact I've seen all of my current BDs so I think I need to buy about a dozen more.

I think right now its good time for a pause because the very good deals have been missing for the most part for a year or so..But that depends on what your interest is regarding titles .

Same here, the list is getting shorter and shorter.

a couple of years ago I was in the same situation. I had more movies that I had bought and not watched then watched. so I did go and watch the rest of them. it did take some time. I did pretty good job. now I am more or less caught up and only 1 percent not watched and not 70 percent like last time. I did a better job on the blu ray watching then I did with the dvds. in fact I would have the dvd and never watched it but then got it on blu ray and then watched it. I only watched the movie. I didnt watch the extras. here is a list of my collection. it was interesting revisiting some movies. some I liked more then others. some I had not seen in ages or since the vhs/theatre release.
https://www.blu-ray.com/community/co...r=rubystone356

when I started getting caught up. I started to watch them in theatre release order. which was interesting. specially when I watched an early director work compared to his later years.

I'll never go cold turkey but I do see myself slowing down in about a year.

I switched over to blu ray back in April 2011 and in less then a year I've upgraded almost all of the DVD's that I care to. I have about 15 more titles on DVD that I want to upgrade that I haven't found a good deal on, that haven't been released yet, or haven't been announced as being put on blu.

I've bought 488 blus and counting in less then a year thanks to clearance sales, bargain bins, selling dvd's and using the cash for upgrades, and stores going out of business.

I keep promising the wife the amount of blu ray's coming into the house will slow down as I am getting to the point where there's not much left to upgrade. Once that happens, I'll probably only be getting about 5 or 6 new releases a month. Seeing as though I don't spend money on anything else, I think I'll be in pretty good shape.

I went cold turkey for almost 3 years, only because I was so busy with work I didn't have time for anything.

I've watched most of my blu-rays that I have bought and continue to watch 2 per weekend to catch up. I'll likely keep buying serious classics and I don't regret many purchases. If I had to sell some it would be not very many. I probably would donate them rather than sell them.

I look at my collection as something that will upgrade with the new Ultra HD 4k system that is coming. I'll probably enjoy them for at least another 10 years. It will be a few years until 4K is available and many more years for the titles to trickle out. Some movies may not get better in quality if old transfers are used. Some TV shows like Poirot may not benefit much from 4K for me to care about upgrading.

Also if movies end up online in high quality most people will probably look at an interface instead of a library style collection. When music and movies become like tap water and utilities we won't have this problem anymore.

I recently did a spring cleaning of my books and I just donated the ones I know I'll never read again and bought expensive leather bound books that will be read many times for the rest of my life. I may do the same with my blu-rays if I had enough of certain titles. I think 400 blu-rays will be the max for me because I can't like much more than that. In reality I probably could reduce safely to 200 or less and find time to do other things.
