This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. And yes, I know how different it is from the stage musical (which I'm looking forward to seeing on Broadway this fall), but I still love this movie. Just watched the DVD again a few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I can't wait to get this on blu.

Review copy. My review will likely be up later today, but I'll make sure to post a link here as there will be screen caps included. Just be warned, I'm not too kind on the film itself... but Sony really has done an outstanding job with the A/V.

"Let's Go To The Movies" is - I think - meant to express Annie's joy in her new life. I'm not sure it goes over as well as planned, because the lavish indulgence that's meant to be a 30's fantasy today plays like horrible excess. Last edited by Ernest Rister; 09-25-2012 at 06:57 PM. |

Annie never thought her parents left her at the orphanage by accident. They'd left a note saying they'd be back (I believe they were looking for work), and broke off part of her locket to bring back with them just so they'd be able to prove they were her real parents. She actually had good reason to suspect they'd be back - why else would they have taken the locket if they'd planned to abandon her?
Unless the review refers to the lyric "Their one mistake was giving up me," which isn't a literal accident, it's just a dent in how great she imagined her parents must be. The songs that were cut from the stage musical and replaced in the film did a much better job advancing the plot - "NYC" (replaced in the film with "Let's Go to the Movies") was when you first saw Warbucks and Annie actually bonding, and "Something Was Missing" (which was cut from the film entirely - although I loved Albert Finney's performance) took place at a point in the show where Annie starts to realize that her parents might actually be gone and Warbucks fills in that gap to tell her how much he loves her. I love that song, wish it had been left in the movie. There parts of the 1982 movie I love - ending with "I Don't Need Anything" instead of "A New Deal for Christmas", and the song between Warbucks and Hannigan at the orphanage is great too. The orphans had a bit more to do in the film too (trying to stop Annie's kidnapping). But there's stuff in the musical I wish they'd left in. |

Great review - cant wait to get mine next Tuesday. As for the changes made to the move, I grew up on ANNE both on stage and the move so I love both equally, though I see them as two different beasts. In my opinion, Annie the Movie has one song leg up on the show: the hilarious and wonderfully performed "Sign" with Carol and Albert. "NYC" is my favorite song in the show and I miss it every time I watch the move, but "Sign" more than makes up for it for me.

It's weird to think about all the scenes in and around the mansion were filmed at my college, Monmouth University. They used the mansion for, well, the mansion. It's amazing the way they turned a building full of offices into the mansion you see. I was only about 3 years old when the movie came out so it wasn't my college at the time, but I hope they have some behind the scenes stuff about filming there. The actress who played Annie is an adjunct instructor in the theater department at the school now. When she came back, she said it was like coming back to the set since that's how she remembered it.
