Most receivers don't accept DSD natively and the majority of SACD players, in North America at least, all use 24/96 decimation for DSD so the PS3 is actually better than most standalones.
So true. In fact, the SACD team at Sony worked directly with the PS3 team to make it everything short of a flagship player.

And you definitely don't need a $1000+ receiver to play it. There are several companies such as Onkyo, Panasonic, and Sony themselves that make sub-$500 HDMI receivers, most of which even have multiple HDMI inputs that do both audio and video switching. Some of the low/mid-level Denons are also under $1000 and do a very nice job with the PS3 and SACDs.

For With Teeth specifically, it's 24/48.

The DVD-A multi-channel mix absolutely blows away the Dolby Digital mix, so if you're enjoying the DD5.1, imagine how much better it could be?

Here's where I fall off of the technical info, as I never got into SACD and DVD-A. What do all those numbers mean?

The easiest way to describe it would be to compare it to CD.

CD uses 16-bit words, sampled at 44,100 times a second.
Hence - 16/44.1

DVD-Audio uses 24-bit words sampled at, for stereo, up to 192,000 times a second.

If resolution is bits per second:

CD = 705,600 bits per second
DVD-A = 4,608,000 bits per second

SACD is a whole different ball game as it's not PCM.

I'm so hoping that the Joshua Tree 20th anniversary edition that's coming out will be SACD hybrid.

Ok well im kind of oblivious when it comes to receivers (the decoding and all that mess)... I've been spending good part of my days at work reading about them on AVS tho, considering they want me to start repairing them at work haha ... anywho, is that any better then a Sony STR-DG800?? Just want to make sure if I do purchase a new receiver I don't want to be losing out on anything.

Holy Crap! Has it really been 20 years? I was 18 when it came out and thought I was old back then.

Loving the Genesis SACD box sets right now. The surround mixes are great, and the SQ is incredible. SACD reveals so many layers that got lost in the CD mix.

Yeah, yeah... SACD's still sound phenominal at 24/176.4kHz, but like I was saying you're effectively downrezing the audio which 98% of listeners won't be able to detect anyway... but still... it's about principle, man, and harkens back to heated battles over DSD vs. LPCM.

It's why I plan to pick up an Oppo 980H - for DSD playback and DVD-Audio playback. I don't always speak for myself.

The only reason I still own a DVD player (Denon DVD-756) is for the SACD and DVD-A playback. Other than that I have no reason to own one.

I was looking for my first "high-end" CD player when I stumbled across a Sony777ES stereo SACD/CD player at a close-out price. Haven't looked back since with very few CD purchases and more than 300 SACD purchases. I've since added a Universal DVD-V/DVD-A/SACD multichannel player.

The PS3 was on my short list of Blu-ray players; I was initially intrigued by it's SACD playback until I found out it only supported 2-channel on the audio outputs.

There's a decent chance Blu-ray in some form or another will eventually supplant SACD as the high resolution audio format of choice. Heck the ability to toss in high def video with the hi-rez audio is a big plus for me.

Yes they can, matrixed into 2 channels.

That is also the reason I keep my Denon player.

I've enjoyed both SACD and DVD-Audio for a while, mostly on the few soundtrack releases that employ them -- it's the large orchestras that benefit the most from the added clarity.

And anyone who hasn't heard the 5.1 mix of the LOTR Complete Recordings hasn't really heard that music.
