My attitude on this has changed over time. Previously, for TV show season sets in particular, I had issues with getting the newer season(s) of a TV show on Blu-Ray when I had the previous ones on DVD. This was both for the look of the packaging, as well as just having it all in one consistent format. I actually even did this with a couple of movie sequels that didn't have the previous installments released on Blu-Ray (Rush Hour 3 and Santa Clause 3 both come to mind). However, gradually over time my attitude shifted. I think my first exception to this was Indiana Jones 4. I already had the original 4-disc DVD Box Set release of the Trilogy (with the 3 movies and the bonus disc). This was an easy stepping stone point for me for 2 reasons. For one, it was the kind of movie that I wanted to have in Hi-Def. And two, from the perspective of the packaging (and how they look lined up on the shelf), being that I had the older movies in a nice, convenient box set on DVD, getting the 4th one on DVD wouldn't work as well since the packaging wouldn't look great lined up with the consistent box set. For a while I also had issues with buying TV season sets (i.e. I have seasons 6 and 7 of Smallville on DVD... though 6 is more justified since it came out on DVD, Blu-Ray, and HD-DVD when the format war was still going, and I didn't want to buy it in Hi-Def and risk getting it on the losing format). Though I've become less concerned about format and packaging consistency and more about quality. So, I picked up Smallville Season 8 on Blu-Ray, as well as The Office Season 5, My Name is Earl Season 4, How I Met Your Mother Season 4, and South Park Season 12. So, at this point, going forward, if there is both a DVD and Blu-Ray option, I will almost always pick the Blu-Ray over the DVD. My ONLY remaining potential conflict is Harry Potter. As it is, I have 1-5 on DVD. 6 is coming out soon. On the one hand, yes, I would prefer to have it in the better quality. On the other hand, with that particular series, being that there are so many movies in it, the most of which are already out, I've been in the mind set that I wouldn't bother buying them on Blu-Ray until all of the movies are released and just get the inevitable ultimate box-set in Hi-Def. As it is, they are already re-releasing the first 2 HP movies on Blu-Ray in the new Ultimate Editions with the option for the extended versions. I figure they'll eventually do this with all of the movies, and hopefully put it in one set. Plus, being that I already have 1-5 on DVD with no intention of getting rid of them (even once I get them all on Blu-Ray down the road), it would be kind of nice to go ahead and end up with a set of all 8 movies since i'm already so close. |

I like how on the side of the box, the pictures are of Homer and Marge from the original look they had on "The Tracy Ulman Show". |

Yeah I don't care about packaging either, I guess I can understand it, but reading some posts about people not buying a movie due to there being or not being a slipcase or other minor things doesn't make much sense. Wrong topic to vent so that's all I got.

Personally, I would prefer a keep case (one of those 4 disc ones like godfather had), but if they decide to just do what paramount did for south park then i won't be entirly dissapointed Judging from the coverart though, it does look like a digipak, and i'm assumin it will be shorter then the DVD sets (although its hard to tell if it's just a slip cover over some other sytle of packaging) |

According to TVshowsonDVD.com, it's official for January 12th http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Sim...-Blu-ray/12874
The Bluray will be 2 discs and contain 21 episodes of season 20 (i believe that the entire season?) Looks like there won't be commentaries or any other extras besides a featurette "The 20th anniversary special sneek peek by Morgan spurlock" But It may be a case of they just haven't been announced yet ![]() Bluray coverart ![]() |

1)extras and commentaries are included and FOX just hasn't announced them yet 2)Because they have jumped 7 seasons, commentaries haven't been recorded yet and FOx is simply releasing this as essentialy barebones just to jump on the bluray bandwagon or too see what the market for Simpsons on Blu is like, in which case we'll likley see a second "special edition" release a few years down the road when the normal released seasons have caught up to 20 I'm glad to finally be getting simpsons on Blu (having it on 2 disc instead of 4 is nice too) but something smells fishy about this, especially since the producers and creators in the past have said every episode will get a commentary Also, I checked wikipedia and there were 21 episodes in the 20th season which means we will be getting the first 9 eps of the season that were'nt animated in HD, now, whether they will be presented in SD, croped and upconverted or something else entirely is still anyones guess and thats assuming we actually are getting the full 21 episodes, that could just be an assumption right now, with the set only on 2 Discs it could also be possible it will only contain the 14 HD episodes (not that 2 blurays couldn't hold 10 or 11 episodes a piece, but so far has any TV show released a bluray that contained more episodes on a single disc then it's DVD release had?) |

The truth is that Fox hasn't issued an official press release or announcement, so the extras simply haven't been made public yet. |

I understand that the procedure they have for recording these commentaries, but that is my point...It's been mentioned before from those involved that It's usually the recording of commentaries that hold up the release schedule of the seasons thats why we had over a year delay between season 10 11 and 12, because animaters, voice cast, writers etc. were all too busy with the movie and the switch to HD to record commentaries The release of the sets have been like this : First Season- Sep 25, 2001 That said it's possible that FOX sprung a bluray release on them while they were in their planned schedule of recording season 13 (which by pattern should have been out possibly in Dec 09) and they basically said, sure but it will take a certain amount of time to record the commentaries, and FOX wanted this out in January so they just decided to go without the commentaries for now I'm not saying there won't be commentaries, but i get a bad feeling that we may not see them on this release, i'm basing this soley on the timing of the release and the fact that the bluray set is only 2 discs and apparently all 21 episodes (over 400 minutes) I hope i'm wrong though since no commentaries on an average season would affect my decision to buy this, even if it is finally in HD |

They could be recording them as we speak, press the discs in December and ship to retail in January as planned. I would be very surprised if there were no commentaries on this release. Also, I wouldn't worry about this being only 2 discs. The entire season is just under 7 hours in length, and each blu-ray disc can easily hold 3.5 hours of HD video, audio and extras. This is not related to Season 20, but it's still interesting:
http://entertainment.ha.com/common/v...1&Lot_No=50423 http://entertainment.ha.com/common/v...1&Lot_No=50424 Those are 2 animation cells from Season 13, seems that they weren't draw in 4:3, does anyone know something about that? |
