The film was given a new English title earlier this year. Journey To Agartha: Children Who Chase Lost Voices.

It's a bit less of a mouthfull than Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Deep Below, but already it's causing confusion

Here's the films English poster.

Also, I think we should continue this in the Anime Blu-ray (UK Releases) thread

Sorry if the answer is obvious, but I couldn't find any info - are there any extras with this?
I'm new to this whole anime thing, having only really seen Akira previously. Tempted to give it a go.

there are 0 extras, this is a barebones release

even worse though, the picture is not full screen, there are huge black bars on either side of the picture. for £17.99 this is ridiculous.

It's supposed to be like that. Ninja Scroll's OAR is, was and always will be 4:3.

that's because it's in it's original aspect ratio of 1.33:1

the original DVD was 1.85:1 but was cropped top and bottom so it missing picture info. what the BD shows is how it was animated

p.s this includes and exclusive audio commentary, trailer and TV spot

Yes it's pillarboxed but thats how it's meant to be seen. Just like Star Trek TNG on BD. Would you rather have a mess like The World At War where people heads are cut off top and bottom because they wanted it to be widescreen? No thanks...

The 20 page booklet is an excelent special feature if you ask me.

Perfect example...

In the case of the title sequence , the loss is 30% since Bluray cropping dug into the width aswell .

Most B&W movies benefit from the restoration process .
I'ld hazard a guess that most of the movies prior to 2000 benefited more from the restoration process than the increase in resolution .
After 2000 , movies have benefited more from the increased resolution and in some cases even the increase in framerate (from 24 fps to 30 fps) .

A few examples of the restoration process at work in the Bluray release of the World at War series (as compared to that DVD original) .

.

It's fairly clear that Bluray may have had access to more width than the DVD original .

It's all good

Can anyone confirm the presence of accurate subtitles for the Japanese track? As in, they're not just dubtitles that sub the English track?

i had never seen this movie before i bought the steelbook so didnt know the aspect ratio. fair enough this is how its meant to look but i cant stand side black bars. its a personal thing. dont have to jump down my throat for it, i was just expecting it to be a 1:85 ratio which imo all cartoons/animated/anime should be but it was originally 1:33 so as mavrick said looks better than messing up the picture making it full screen.

Make up your mind, dammit!

Tho it's not like the DVD was lush with extras; most of the ones it did have was just fluff like text screens and what have you, and I bet the booklet covers most of the same stuff anyway. In fact, a lot of these anime movie "classics" have been kinda poor in terms of extras. At least the Akira steelbook came with the booklet.

Remember the old Pioneer DVD of Akira? Why the hell couldn't they include any of that stuff on the blu-ray? Then again, the UK DVD had the production report with the really stilted and awkward english dub so it's probably for the better.

Also...anyone else noticed that the old 10th Anniversary DVD came with Stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and DTS-ES 6.1 mixes of both audio tracks while this one has only DTS-MA 5.1 in english and Stereo in Japanese?
