I broke down and bought the Terminal on DVD at a lockbuster closing for $1.99. The worst about that movie is Catherine Zeta-Jones character. I've had delays and spent long enough in international terminals that I've felt like Hnks' character.

I fully agree with the OP.
Ever since upgrading I barely watch DVD's anymore unless it's movies or TV shows that haven't been released yet on the format or never will be due to source limitations, for example a lot of the old BBC TV Shows that were filmed on videotape which are limited to SD. I do though keep DVD's of movies that exist on BD if the DVD's have different versions of the movies that are just as good as the versions released on BD or are actually even better such as Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Wars OT etc. |

I still have nearly 500 DVDs and continue to watch many things that way. I haven't gotten crazy with Blu-ray, and have saved it mostly either for newer films, since they are generally shot now with Blu in mind and thus look/sound fantastic, or special older films that have been remastered very nicely for Blu and actually are an improvement over the DVD. Otherwise, I'm fine still watching a lot of stuff on DVD.

Blu-ray already has enough quality material on it to last several lifetimes. That combined with it having to compete with television, books and video games for my entertainment time means I never have to watch a DVD again. |

Yeah there is a lot of quality content available on Blu-Ray. Still, there are a lot of films and TV shows that I am a fan of that aren't on Blu-Ray, and I wouldn't want to go without seeing them again just because they aren't available in HD. It seems silly to me to forgo content that one is/might be a huge fan of just because of that. |

A lot of shows from the 70s were shot on videotape and due to that fact will never hit blu as the higher resolution won't do anything for them. Heck there are still a handful of movies I would welcome on just standard dvd as they were only released on tape. |

If a title is available in both formats, of course I buy the Blu Ray version.
But if it's only available on DVD and I really want it, I buy it. Some DVD titles are terrific. For example, I have the 4 disc box set of the Indiana Jones movies (the first 3 films and a forth disc of special features, etc.). To my eyes, the picture quality of the films is so good, it's border-line Blu Ray, and for that reason I've held off on buying the Blu Ray versions (so far). Sometimes I think we get too much of a good thing. By that I mean, the picture quality is so good, it can sometimes take me out of the movie. We just finished watching Psycho on Blu. PQ was SO good it was hard to pay attention to the movie itself. I just started King Kong (original) on Blu. Absolutely loved this film when I was a kid, and now at age 65, I still do. Regardless of format, the fact that I can watch a movie I've loved all my life any time I want to is one of life's pleasures for me. |

I think Blurays can be great if they spend the money to do a decent transfer. I have Star Trek 2 & 4 that don't look any better than my DVD's. Same with The Goonies, IMO the blu doesn't look any better.
I do like the fact that blus are much more scratch resistant. But DVD's are so cheap now compared to blus. I don't collect bluray to have thousands of titles. It is reserved mainly for titles I want to watch repeatedly and at the best quality possible. The Sound of Music is an example. Transfer was incredible, sound too. I have less than 50 blurays in my collection and over 200 DVD's. My new Oppo 103 has actually made my DVD's look even better. To sum up, I'll be watching DVD's for a long long time to come. |

However, as you mentioned, Blu's are much more scratch resistant than regular DVD's, so IMHO that's enough reason to get a Blu. Typically, if you go into a retail store the Blu will only be $2-4 more dollars than a DVD, and IMHO the Blu's added durability is worth the additional price - even if the PQ isn't much better. |

Try comparing the Blu-rays to the DVDs on a projector and you won't say that again, even with a so-so transfer. The larger the display, the more you reap the benefits of Blu-ray.

You may be right, I don't have a projector and have no plans to get one. It just irritates me that the companies that release movies on bluray take advantage of the format, meaning they cheapen out and don't do anything special to put a movie on blu but because it's on blu most of the general public will think it's much better than the DVD and it just ain't so. |

I had this problem for awhile, but I'm largely "over it".
Once there is a realization that not every film will come to blu-ray, and that quite frankly, not every film is making much of a leap when it comes to blu-ray - watching something on DVD is much easier to accept. Obviously it's great to watch films that receive proper remasters, and take advantage of every bit of increased resolution and data that blu-ray allows. However I've realized that it's not just the format that makes these drastic upgrades possible, it's the process of doing new restorations. If the DVD is well done from a few years ago, it can still be very watchable. It really depends on the source material for the DVD. That being said, if the option is there I'm never going to choose to purchase a DVD over blu-ray regardless of price. However I can see a future where there is a 4K stream available, and that 4K stream will be superior to a mediocre blu-ray disc, and some of the "HD streams" and even DVD's are pretty acceptable to watch. So I'm not so married to the format. Last edited by AgentOrange; 06-03-2014 at 06:40 PM. |
