And dystopian science fiction does tend to be a bit dark (that's kind of what the 'dys' is all about) so yeah, depressing is pretty fair. Piece of crap? Hardly. It was very well written, very well acted and very, very deftly directed and if you didn't see parallels to ethical questions we face in the here and now you just weren't looking. Quote:
This was a little too high-profile to make my list but yes, it was absolutely fantastic. |

I really enjoyed Hanna. It's very much an exercise in style, so I can see how it rubbed some folks the wrong way, but I thought it was way better than the overall critical/imdb consensus gives it credit for.

[Show spoiler] EDIT: There are romance elements, sure, but as you say, it was more about "humanity" in Blade Runner, whereas Never LEt Me Go was more about a love triangle, one that could have been in any genre. Most of the romance plot/dialogue, unlike Blade Runner or Solaris, was your standard 101 Romance Love Triangle stuff, that wasn't dependent on the sci-fi plot, IMO. Just my 2 cents. You could imagine my disappointment when I found out what the movie was actually about, and somebody like me who needs a happy ending in my romantic movies, this just wasn't what I was looking for! ![]() My biggest problem with the film really is quite simple, [Show spoiler]

@bluearth
Totally agree with you on Sucker Punch especially the comparison. My personal picks for underrated films are The Last Circus- Very strange, but very good. Midnight in Paris- I'm not generally a huge fan of Woody Allen, but this was an incredible movie. Melancholia- Not enough people have seen this! |

Liberal Arts/ Happythankyoumoreplease - Josh Radnor first two efforts in my opinion showcase a young Woody Allen - if he can honed his craft more, Radnor could a remarkable success.
Red State - Lots of people hated this effort but Kevin Smith's vicious take on horror in my book was a unpredictable, tense achievement. Beginners - Yes, Christopher Plummer won the Academy Award but most people did miss this film and it's a shame - it's a wonderfully sharp dramedy with tremendous character relationships. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World - The fact that audiences passed this movie over is shocking. The comic series is brilliant and Edgar Wright captured the style to a tee - it's simply one of the most visually unique, entertaining films I had the privilege to watch in 2010's so far. |
