I liked this season as well. MUCH better than the season that came before it. Ray Stevenson's character was one of the more interesting villains we've had in a while from this show.

I'm about halfway through the season so far and I find it much better than season 6. I especially have enjoyed seeing Dexter and Debra's dynamic change over the course of events. The villain is enthralling. Probably the only character I'm disappointed with is Quinn, his arc isn't terribly interesting at this point. Hopefully that will improve as the season unfolds. If season 8 is half this good it will be an excellent farewell for the series.

Quinn is a never-ending joke with me and my girlfriend. The character has been completely useless since he arrived. Further to that...perhaps the biggest problem with the show as a whole is that there are no characters whose story or motives are even close to as interesting as Dexter's. I feel the later seasons have stripped away the elements that made Dexter Morgan so compelling in the early years.

The first, second and fourth seasons are some of my favorite television drama seasons ever. I think as Dexter gradually becomes more sympathetic and less deliberately sociopathic, the show loses its charm.

Season 7 is up there with 1 & 4 as far as I'm concerned.

Dexter is the quintessential example of a psychopath. He kills without remorse or regret and is able to justify his murderous behavior to himself, while fitting in within multiple social environments at the same time. A sociopath would likely not be able to handle a full time job in a law-enforcement office and a long-term romantic relationship with a stable partner the way that Dexter does.

[Show spoiler]They have certainly made Dexter more human, and as a result more vulnerable so I can see how that could generate some sympathy. However, during season 7 Dexter stopped holding his Dark Passenger responsible for his actions. This gave him the freedom to kill people who didn't fit the code. If anything that makes the character less sympathetic as he is now free to kill anyone he wishes, not just those the code demands, apparently wihout remorse.

I will agree with you on that. You rarely see him be a detective. I just wondered from the beginning of the season who he was going to be hooking with next yet that was related to the case, and voila, there was Nadia. I don't really take him seriously on the show (and he looks gaunt now that he's so thin, but that's another discussion altogether). As to your other point... I would agree that they aren't as great developing interesting stories and arcs for the other characters, save for the guy who was trying to get Dexter early in the series. I would love a bit more background on some of the others, such as Masuka and LaGuerta. Batista I like, but he's never been a particular favorite. I was rather annoyed that they killed off a character right away I thought would be interesting (trying not to give anything away for anyone who hasn't watched yet).

Dexter season 7 comments

One of my family members is a Dexter fan, and they own Dexter seasons 1-7 on Blu-ray. The good news is that all 3 Blu-ray discs for Dexter season 7 has a super-fast loading time that is comparable to the loading speed of the DVD format. In theory, no consumer should have any complaints about the loading reliability and speed of season 7 of Dexter. The reason for the fast loading time is because season 7 of Dexter loads directly to the Blu-ray disc main menu instead of the BD-LIVE main menu. In fact all 3 Blu-ray discs for Dexter season 7 does not even use BD-LIVE at all (not even an option to manually launch BD-LIVE is offered). This is the very first Dexter season that does not use BD-LIVE at all.

The big negative about Dexter season 7 is the fact that there is absolutely no bonus features offered at all (Not even an audio commentary track). Season 7 of Dexter has plenty of space on all 3 Blu-ray discs to place a few HD and SD extra features on the physical Blu-ray discs, however the studio decided not to use that available space. For example on Blu-ray disc number 1 for season 7 a total of 43.6GB is used on the 50GB Blu-ray disc. On Blu-ray disc number 2 for season 7 a total of 42.8GB is used out of 50GB. On Blu-ray disc number 3 for season 7 a total of 43GB is used out of 50GB. So Showtime Entertainment/Paramount Home Video if they wanted to add a few extra features to season 7 of Dexter, they would not have needed a 4th bonus disc.

Now if the bonus features for Season 7 of Dexter were not ready at the time of release date, then Showtime/Paramount Home video should have offered a manual BD-LIVE feature. For example it would have been nice to have Blu-ray disc number 3 have a manual menu option in the Blu-ray disc main menu to access BD-LIVE. Hopefully season 8 of Dexter on Blu-ray will offer at least some Blu-ray disc based extra features or at the very minimum BD-LIVE based extra features with a manual BD-LIVE interface.
