I agree with the Prometheus opinions, the vfx in that movie were outstanding, and Micheal Fassbender was solid as David.

Brave WINNING????!!!??? Wtf! Frankenweeine, Wreck it Ralph, Paranorman were different applications of animation (more specifically Frankenweeine and Paranorman) and the story was better (Wreck It Ralph). I think Brave won because it was a Pixar flick.
I think Frankenweenie and Ralph split the vote. It happens. Still, it must be said, that 13 years after the Best Animated Feature category was created, the studio that created the American animated feature has yet to win in the Best Animated Feature category. Also, as mind-blowing as this is, Paperman is the first Disney-animated short subject to win an Oscar since "It's Tough to Be a Bird" in 1969. 44 years without an Oscar win, until last night (and even knowing that, I still would have voted for "Adam and Dog").

Haven't had the chance to see Pi yet but felt that Prometheus really deserved the award for effects. Pretty much flawless. Whilst The Avengers did a lot of things right in the effects department and showed us some truly astonishing work, there were a fair amount of moments that weren't entirely convincing.

Again I haven't seen Pi but Skyfall, despite it's flaws, was stunningly shot.

Really glad Christoph Waltz got another Oscar, not just because he provided another memorable performance as Dr King Schultz but because it helped me disprove my friends point that Tarantino "isn't a great director, he just hires great actors". Waltz is great, but I think the fact he's won two Academy Awards as a result of two nominations which were both for parts in a Tarantino film proves something. She also says that Tarantino isn't a great script writer, so him picking up Best Original Screenplay at both the Oscars and the BAFTAs was very nice

Also very happy that Jennifer Lawrence won just because she seems like such an awesome person. She never comes across as a desperate, fame hungry starlet nor does she come across as pretentious. Anyone who is equally happy and proud to do serious dramas and franchise blockbusters (and not look down on blockbusters as some actors do, despite their involvement) and does a great job in both is pretty neat.

NO mention of Andy Griffith, Larry Hagman, Alex Carass, and Phillys Diller during the in memorium part of the awards!!! Seriously why the fu<k can't the Academy ever get this right???? Every year they forget to include at least one well known actor that has left us!!

I agree for the most part. I think if a film is really good, it shouldn't be frowned upon just because it is a comic book adaptation. The Dark Knight most definitely deserved a Best Picture nomination in 2008. I'd argue that Robert Downey Jr. should've gotten a Best Actor Nomination for Tony Stark that year as well (amazingly enough, he got Supporting Actor for Kirk Lazarus instead.)

This year though, of the big money makers, I don't think any really stood outside of maybe Looper and Skyfall. I do think DKR deserved to get some technical nominations though.

If Life Of Pi didn't come out this year, the award would go to Prometheus for sure.

They didn't make me necessarily "pissed" but ones that I was definitely hoping for that didn't end up happening were:

The Perks of Being a Wallflower - Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay
Rian Johnson for Best Original Screenplay (Looper)
Drew Godard & Joss Whedon - Best Original Screenplay (Cabin in the Woods)

I knew Perks wasn't going to get a Best Picture nom, but I thought it would have a chance for adapted screenplay. I guess not.

hmmm, unsure now. I am sure Gwyneth won for "Shakespeare in Love" and this was around the time Kate Winslet was nominated for "Titanic"?.

If you haven't seen Pi, then it's a little off the mark to claim other films "deserve" the award more. On what basis, if you haven't even seen the film that won? Pi definitely deserved visual effects. Watch the film, then watch how it was shot.

Yeah I worded that badly. I meant that based on what I had seen, which was all the other films in the category, Prometheus was far and away the most impressive. By saying that I hadn't yet seen Life of Pi I was stating that I felt that Prometheus really showed some award worthy effects but, at the same time, I didn't have a full picture regarding its competition
