Cool

Good in depth information above, thanks Sookymonster.

My favorite retro-conversion is absolutely Titanic. See it on a 100"+ 3D projection screen and the scale and power is jaw-dropping.

Little Mermaid gets an honorable mention.

Personally, I enjoyed but wasn't overly impressed with Jurassic Park and Top Gun. I do think they're both worth checking out, though.
MIB 3 was really nicely done and totally changed my thoughts about what Prime Focus can offer for strong 3D. Great job and a cool movie too.

Yes, one of the best 3D movies of 2013. Amazing 3D IMO. Del Toro and his team here are awesome for Pacific Rim's imagery, animation, designs and 3D.

And in that movie, the one scene that made my teenaged son jump out of the couch... when the raptor busts through the wall next to the girl's shoulder! I knew it was coming, and laughed so hard watching him jump like that. Best laugh and great use of a 3d effect!
That was a great scene, yes. Jurassic Park is a Great Direct 3D conversion, despite the smoothing of the noise/grit texture from the film.

Is Pacific Rim technically a conversion though? It is a hybrid from what I have read and largely native. The converted parts are those with humans on screen IIRC from my reading while everything else is native.

If we are considering PR a conversion, I would put it at the top of my list, but I have not seen a few of the highly praised conversions like Titanic.

As far as I know, it was filmed first and then the studio asked for 3D and the director insisted on a proper conversion with plenty of time (8 months).

While this is true, Del Toro from my reading had ILM render ALL the CGI elements in native 3d (the fights) which is why this is considered a hybrid and not a straight conversion since much of it is technically native 3d.

Yes I believe your right, I just class it as a conversion as principal photography was done and completed in 2D first.

Default Aftermarket 3D Conversions

I know there's much discussion about the validity of aftermarket conversions, and we know a large number are very poorly done 2D pushed back into the screen type things, but I wondered if we could put together a top twenty aftermarket conversions worth seeing?

To clarify what is meant by aftermarket conversion, thats one where there was no original intention of the film ever being seen in 3D. I'd also suggest we exclude pirate conversions. I believe over the next couple of years we'll see a fair number more so would be good to have a list of titles worth seeing.

As I have skin in the game I'm not going to suggest any of our AIPOP-3D titles but here's my starter top 10 list.

1. Jurassic Park
2. Terminator 2
3. Titanic
4. Wizard of Oz
5. Jaws (No Blu-ray)
6. Dawn of The Dead (No Blu-ray)
7. The Nightmare Before Christmas
8. The Lion King
9. Beauty and the Beast
10. The Little Mermaid

What others are on your lists?

Not a bad list!

I wouldn't change the top 5 at all! I'd probably prefer to re-watch Titanic over T2, but the conversion is definitely just a bit better on T2. I'd put Top Gun at 6... But I haven't watched it since I got into conversion myself so maybe it wouldn't hold up! I'd also kick Dawn of the Dead off the list and move Nightmare Before Christmas down to the ten spot. If I could watch Jaws again it might edge out Wizard of Oz, it's so hard to judge 3D without a home viewing or two!

Also I would desperately love to see the 20th anniversary conversion of the first Harry Potter movie that only got released in theaters in China (and maybe Australia?)

1. Jurassic Park
2. Terminator 2
3. Titanic
4. Wizard of Oz
5. Jaws (No Blu-ray)
6. Top Gun
7. Beauty and the Beast
8. The Lion King
9. The Little Mermajd
10. The Nightmare Before Christmas

I suggest you exclude titles unavailable for home viewing as nobody has much chance of seeing any of them, Star Wars Episodes II and III for example.

I’d put The Wizard of Oz at #2 and The Nightmare Before Christmas absolutely dead last, most useless 3-D conversion ever. Otherwise I pretty much agree with the order of your list.

Interesting that some of you rate Dawn of the Dead when anyone and everyone who saw it said it’s pretty much a poor auto conversion.

I would add Star Wars: The Force Awakens. There are a few genuinely great 3D moments and JJ Abrams is on record several times stating that it was envisioned and made as a 2D movie.

Pretty much every modern 3D conversion was only ever envisaged as a 2D movie.

As for Dawn of the Dead, it's easy to overrate 3D films you only saw once and can't watch again, memories tend to be stronger than the reality.

Andrew’s list is of legacy conversions, made many years after a film’s original 2D release. And I saw Dawn of the Dead 3-D and it absolutely looks better than an auto-conversion. Although come to think of it I’d add Top Gun somewhere in there and kick Nightmare off the list entirely, DotD’s 3-D is at least present. As for conversions made for a film’s original theatrical run, The Force Awakens is definitely a good one. I’d put Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, Edge of Tomorrow, and R.I.P.D. up there too.

I think you could argue over a top 10 but are there even 20 that fit into that category? Not counting autoconversions of course.

Yeah, there aren’t a lot of legacy conversions. I’m glad that AIPOP is stepping up to the plate on that, with public domain films at least. I’d definitely add House on Haunted Hill to the top ten list as well. If they ever did a version 2.0 that fixes the few errors, I’d be all over that.
