Question What is your favourite conversion / converted 3D movie?

Now we have reached a high level of conversion quality/technology I think it would be fun to list your favourite conversions.

I don't want A debate about native vs conversions, just what the thread says...

This also covers animated movies that have been re-rendered in 3D.

To get the ball rolling I would say Titanic is about the best I have seen, though I also like Wrath of the Titans, The Avengers and MIB3 is right up there.

Animated, I think Beauty and the Beast looks gorgeous. Excuse my prior mention of Madagascar 3 and Tangled! I had a brain freeze. Kunf Fu Panda is up there too.

ps have not seen Jurassic Park yet, but from what I hear, this could also make the list.

My favourite underrated conversion is either Green Hornet or Captain America. However my favourite conversion period is either Titanic, Avengers or Wrath of the Titans.

Tangled and Madagascar 3 was made in 3D from the beginning of their productions.

Re rendered CGI movies can't be compared to cut out conversions. The only really good Re Rendered CGI movies I think are Kung-Fu Panda and Monsters Inc.

Cut out conversions I like are Titanic and Jurassic Park. That's it. Cut out is a nice novelty but the results aren't that nice.

Based upon the answers so far, I think some are interpreting the question as refering to the quality of the conversion process and others are answering with respect to how well they like the movie itself. As far as the quality of the conversion is concerned, I think Titanic is the best I've seen. MIB III is also really good, likely because of the amount of natively rendered 3D CGI that is really "true" 3D to begin with. That said, I'm joining the chorus with a big thumbs down to all conversions versus "real" 3D. I sometimes enjoy a conversion or two, but then when I watch something in real 3D I really notice the difference.

Good list. I was also going to put Green Hornet on the list for the nice 3D layering, despite the conversion errors I noticed.

Yes, the consensus points to Titanic and JP 3D as the top direct conversions.

Thor's 3D gets a lot of criticism, but the decent 3D layers are hard to miss when I watch it, so I like it as well. Captain America also is good, even though they both could be stronger in 3D.

A hit or miss movie for 3D conversion would be Dredd 3D. It has great 3D, and then the next shot is weak 3D and so on.

With Titanic and Jurassic Park's 3D, we get stronger 3D layering, few conversion errors and a definite sense of three dimension. Even most of the edges of human hair look decent, which is probably one of the more difficult materials to separate for layering.

Matthew Bristow, the managing director of Prime Focus London stereo studio answered a question at a gathering for "The Art of Mechanics of Stereo Conversion":
Quote:
Are there particular shots that you would recommend not doing your method and doing live action 3D?

Yes, potentially where there are beards and hair are tougher than others where you've got lots of fine hair detail, these things you might have in close-ups or if its a potential wide shot with a lot of characters or your traveling through a forest. Anything thats got a lot of fine detail in there. We can convert it, its just more time consuming and becomes less cost effective, shots become more expensive for the film makers compared to the costs of shooting those scenes natively
.

I agree about the movie however I was under the impression it was mainly a native 3D production. Its listed here as "Real" -http://realorfake3d.com/ .

Another conversion that I like is Priest, It may not be the best overall movie but the 3D was a good attempt for an early conversion.

These first conversions were usually done by a number of companies taking different bits which is why the quality would vary ( Conan,Green Hornet, Alice in Wonderland).

Dredd is native 3D, and I couldn't disagree with you more about the 3D. I was it was great throughout the movie! Half the time, my jaw was on the floor. There are really some wow moments.

I agree with alot of you... Jurassic Park.

And in that movie, the one scene that made my teenaged son jump out of the couch... when the raptor busts through the wall next to the girl's shoulder! I knew it was coming, and laughed so hard watching him jump like that. Best laugh and great use of a 3d effect!

Default Aftermarket 3D Conversions

I know there's much discussion about the validity of aftermarket conversions, and we know a large number are very poorly done 2D pushed back into the screen type things, but I wondered if we could put together a top twenty aftermarket conversions worth seeing?

To clarify what is meant by aftermarket conversion, thats one where there was no original intention of the film ever being seen in 3D. I'd also suggest we exclude pirate conversions. I believe over the next couple of years we'll see a fair number more so would be good to have a list of titles worth seeing.

As I have skin in the game I'm not going to suggest any of our AIPOP-3D titles but here's my starter top 10 list.

1. Jurassic Park
2. Terminator 2
3. Titanic
4. Wizard of Oz
5. Jaws (No Blu-ray)
6. Dawn of The Dead (No Blu-ray)
7. The Nightmare Before Christmas
8. The Lion King
9. Beauty and the Beast
10. The Little Mermaid

What others are on your lists?
